Obama: CAT will rehire Layoffs if the Stimulus passes
Edited on Wed Feb-11-09 02:01 PM by Perky
SPRINGFIELD, Va. (AP) -- President Barack Obama said Wednesday that heavy-equipment maker Caterpillar has informed him it will rehire some of the thousands of workers it has laid off in recent weeks if Congress passes an economic stimulus bill.

''The time for talk has passed,'' Obama said.

The president's travel to pitch the urgency of the stimulus plan was his third day in a row to leave Washington. On Thursday, he goes to Peoria, Ill., to visit a Caterpillar manufacturing plant.

The world's largest maker of mining and construction machinery announced more than 22,000 job cuts last month amid waning demand for its products.

But Obama said the company told him Wednesday it would hire back some of those workers if the legislation passes. As House and Senate negotiators worked to reconcile differences between competing versions of the legislation, Obama spoke during a visit to a highway construction site here just outside of Washington.

3. Cat must love the road and bridge building part of the stimulus.
Heavy equipment took a huge hit with the world-wide collapse of commodities, and the extraction industries put the brakes on capital improvements.

Good Union jobs that pay a living wage.

WE NEED MORE OF THEM.

8. Caterpillar also employs people in what would otherwise be economically depressed
areas like its HQ in Peoria. That city relies on Cat.

4. Encouraging news
That's the point of a stimulus pkg., stimulate the need for workers and products, get money moving. duh....repubs have tunnel vision, or maybe they are very stingy people. I have run into so many that believe we are doomed with Obama at the helm. You can not have a discussion, it turns into anger.

7. Of course it turns to anger...
When someone has been brainwashed to think the POTUS wasn't born in this country and that he's a terrorist despite all evidence to the contrary, it kind of makes it difficult for them to ever trust a thing he does.
