Miley Cyrus to screen "Hannah Montana: the movie" at White House per Obama girls request
http://www.entertainmentandshowbiz.com/miley-cyrus-white-house-invites-miley-cyrus-to-screen-new-film-2009021611187

Teen actress Miley Cyrus has been invited to screen her upcoming movie ‘Hannah Montana: The Movie’ at the White House.

As per The Insider, Cyrus, 16, was thrilled to bits when she received an invitation to screen the film for first daughters Sasha and Malia Obama.

The Hannah Montana star revealed that the Obama girls had made the request during the Kids’ Inaugural Concert on January 19, where she had performed.

"They said they want me to come and show them my new movie. I would love it. I’m stoked!" Us magazine quoted her as saying. (ANI)

Those kids were never normal anyway. They've always seemed enormously self possessed and mature to me, maybe not in their tastes, but in how they behave.

29. They are kind of living a Hannah Montana life huh?
as I understand the show (my daughter THANK GOD is too young for this show but I know that there will be something like it when she gets to a certain age) Hannah secretly is a big rock star and only a few people know it. Something like that.

The Obama girls are sort of in that situation-they go to school and of course everyone knows who they are but they return each night to the White House.

Anyway it should be fun for them and mom and dad and grandma

68. If all LBJ did was the Great Society,
and the Civil Rights Act, I'd agree with you.
But there's this little thing called the Tonkin Gulf Resolution (lying us into war), which led to the escalation in Vietnam, which led to the "Credibility Gap", which led to rioting and protests in the street, which gave rise to the "Silent Majority", which led to NIXON, and the beginning of the end for the New Deal coalition.
'Nuff said.

Bush lived in TX, was Gov. of TX, and most Texans I've met are VERY similar in attitude. THIS puts me off Texas.
Though I stipulate, Austin is a saving grace.

"if all you see is Texas-bashing..." Quite the stretch, but I can see why one may feel it necessary to project something like that.

As for me, I'd rather judge the individual rather than the geographic location they came from in my opinions of whether I would vote for them or not.

However, I can see how spurious correlations and sweeping generalizations would make both life and thought much, much easier for many people...

...and that was a good, stipulated.

But the whole Vietnam debacle set the stage for Nixon and the fracturing of the New Deal coalition which in turn set the stage for Reagan. Because of Vietnam, Johnson didn't have the political capital to fix the flaws in the Great Society that the Rethugs pounced on and held up as signs of liberal overreach - for which the Rethugs found a willing audience in the "silent majority", many of whom were New Deal Democrats disaffected by the counterculture's bashing of the US over Vietnam. These became the Reagan Democrats.

On balance, NOT good. And his feeling bad about it didn't undo the enormous damage.

If it were not for Vietnam, I'd have a different sig line.

And I'll say what I please about Texas, or any other state in the Union, thank you very much. I seem to recall naming Austin as a saving grace - something you appear to have ignored. If Texas is changing, which from what you say appears to be the case, that's all to the good. But I've yet to have a positive experience of Texas politicians.
Texan PEOPLE, tho - that's another story.

14. I'm a bit puzzled by this
The sexualization of young girls is an unfortunate product of Hollywood and the recording industry and advertising. It's very unfortunate that the Obamas are participating in this unenlightened cultural phenomenon. I love Michelle Obama, but I'm telling her what I would tell any mother of daughters: don't be part of this trash.

49. I couldn't agree more.
Bratz, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Hannah Montana. They are all of a piece. All of these products have been pushed on young girls, who are taught by this fucked-up culture to see them as role models.

Another problem is that Hannah Montana and similar products stifle creativity. Little girls aren't cool if they don't like Hannah Montana. Woe to the kid who'd rather be an astronaut or a scientist than a vapid purveyor of schlock.

Thank you.

Girls are taught early on that their value lies in the ability to attract a boy -- to get a boy to look at them. This is commodified to the nth degree -- used to sell superficiality and commercialism. It's sick, really, and a waste of human potential.

67. Unfortunately, the entertainment industry seems to have more power than the kids or the adults.
Try as you might to shield kids from this stuff, they're going to pick it up at school. And even if they don't find it that interesting, the social pressure to like it can be too much to withstand.

What's really a shame is that there are so many great characters for kids to be interested in, whether from books or real life. But because they're supposed to be obsessed with Hannah Montana they miss a lot of the good things. I know my criticism sounds over the top, but I really think the dumbing-down of American culture is an insidious evil, and targeting it at young kids is unjustifiable.

I know that most people just gloss over the damage that has been done to our young women. Women who would savage a person who suggested that females are inferior to males will support a system that objectifies women and renders them powerless, when the system offers baubles and pretties and froth.

Sounds like the Obama girls are fairly normal girls to me.

All this hand-wringing over this is rather idiotic.
People must not have daughters in the age range.

I have four girls in that age range. The oldest two are full-blooded Koreans from my wife's first marriage. The oldest likes it. Our 2nd doesn't.

The twins think it's funny.

I can't stand it.
But...it's not written for me.

33. Oof, I was hoping that the Miley trend was coming to a natural death.
Oh well, I had terrible taste as a tween. Maybe we can all start sending mix CD's of our favorite stuff to see if we can encourage the First Kids future music choices. Sasha looks like she could be a little goth. :)

35. Oh geez. At 10 I was watching Madonna videos on MTV
"Like a Virgin" was not exactly innocent entertainment. Miley Cyrus is no big deal, her stuff as Hannah Montana is very clean even if she personally is not. They are little girls for God sakes. Let them have some fun. Being under a microscope is not always the greatest so getting to have a personal concert now and then is a nice reward.

36. My girls loved the Spice Girls and Britney Spears in their day.......
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 06:33 PM by FrenchieCat
What I will admit to!

For my daughter pictured below's 9th birthday, we bought her and 4 of her best friends (and her little sister and myself & hubby) tickets to go see "No Doubt", Gwen Stefani's band at the time.

The kids were picked up directly by a limousine at their school, taken to a premier Italian restaurant for dinner, and then driven to the concert. They were picked up afterwards.

They had the sunroof open and were taking turns trying to poke their heads out....

We never did the "Birthday party every year" stuff, so she remembers this birthday very well.

I think that as long as kids do what they are supposed to, a little reward goes a long way!

42. When my daughters were growing up it was Christina, Britney,
No Doubt and Spice girls.

They knew all of the songs.

It didn't make them grow up any faster than they would have otherwise.

50. ok I'm not crazy about Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana
but I'm also not 10 or 7. I have cousins close in age to the Obama girls (9 and 7) and they're nuts about Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers.

When I was growing up it was New Kids on the Block, Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, etc that everyone loved. Every generation has their teen celebrities.

Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 02:02 AM by iamthebandfanman
jesus outa all the teen idols in the last 15 years id hafta say shes the most upstanding...

sometimes i wonder if the media makes scandals outa everything she says or does just to make her get the idea 'it doesnt matter what i do theyll make me evil... so i mite as well do it!'

they just want their drunkard out, coked up, sad pop star to rant about for years on end.

sorry but miley just isnt that scandalous.
i know so many are disappointed.

call me when shes drunk/coked out with her vagina in the air for people to take pictures of, and maybe then ill be outraged.

64. Simple
Because they think it makes them cool to bash on things that are hip for little kids.

As I said in an earlier post 3 of our daughters like the show.
It's written for children.

They like the music.

I don't.
I'm 43.

I'm 47, and I DO like some of it.
"Make Some Noise" has wonderful lyrics:

It's easy to feel like
You're all alone
To feel like nobody knows
The great that you are
The good that's inside you
Is trying so hard to break through

Maybe it's your time to lift up and fly
You won't know if you never try
I will be there with you all of the way
You'll be fine

Chorus:
Don't let anyone
Tell you that you're not strong enough
Don't give up
There's nothing wrong with just being yourself
That's more than enough
Some come on and raise your voice
Speak up loud and make some noise

And sing
Hey, hey
Make some noise
Hey, hey, yeah

You want to be known
You want to be heard
And know you are beautiful
You have so much to give
Some change you wanna live
So shout it out and let it show

You have a diamond inside of your heart
A light that shines bright as the stars
Don't be afraid to be all that you are
You'll be fine
Chorus
Bridge:

You can't just sit back and watch the world change
It matters what you've got to say
There's no one else who can stand in your place
So come on it's never too late

Maybe it's your time to lift up and fly
You won't know if you never try

Chorus

and I'm fine with what I've heard.

Funny thing is, my kid thinks "Corey in the House" is a documentary.

(well, not really, but that's her reference point to what Sasha and Malia are experiencing now. and yeah, she's very excited for them.)

I imagine her vociferous detractors wouldn't be as quick to voice their judgments were we to see their own personal "Top 50" list from when they themselves were in the ten to twelve year old range...

I'm sure Donny Osmond, The Bugaloos, and the Monkees would appear more than a few times... musical purity indeed.

106. Yes But he is levelling the charge that Miley Cyrus is a racist and that picture is proof
I make faces like that to my daughters all the time. They laugh.

It's not racist. As I said "My wife is Korean. My 2 eldest are full blooded Korean and the twins are 1/2."

We do it when we do the "Meh-rong" game.

Calling someone a racist is a highly charged statement and the picture is NOT proof that she is.

I'm guessing if you ask the Asian guy in the pic he'll tell you she's not

I'm shocked she said, "stoked". My friend is going to be so let down - she was joking (she's 40) that she was going to bring back "Stoked" as a commonly used work, about a week ago. She's not going to like any part of this story, then! HA

I'm not giving people the leeway in this day and age. And if she is ignorant to it, then she needs to be called to task and taught a lesson about racism that has been going on in this country for centuries.

102. Why Would They Do This?????????
Cause.................

"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"

I come home in the morning light,
My mother says "When you gonna live your life right?"
Oh,mother,dear,
We're not the fortunate ones,
And girls,
They wanna have fu-un.
Oh,girls,
Just wanna have fun.

The phone rings in the middle of the night,
My father yells "What you gonna do with your life?"
Oh,daddy,dear,
You know you're still number one,
But girls,
They wanna have fu-un,
Oh,girls,just wanna have
That's all they really want.....
Some fun....

When the working day is done,
Oh,girls,
They wanna have fu-un,
Oh,girls,
Just wanna have fun....

Girls,
They want,
Wanna have fun.
Girls,
Wanna have

Some boys take a beautiful girl,
And hide her away from the rest of the world.
I wanna be the one to walk in the sun.
Oh,girls,
They wanna have fu-un.
Oh,girls,
Just wanna have
That's all they really want.....
Some fun....

When the working day is done,
Oh,girls,
They wanna have fu-un.
Oh,girls,
Just wanna have fun...

Girls,
They want,
Wanna have fun.
Girls,
Wanna have.

They just wanna,
They just wanna.....
They just wanna,
(Oh....)
They just wanna.....
(Girls just wanna have fun...)
Oh...

Girls just wanna have fu-un...
They just wanna,
They just wanna....
They just wanna,
They just wanna....
(Oh...)
They just wanna...
(They just wanna have fun...)
Girls just wanna have fu-un...

When the workin',
When the working day is done.
Oh,when the working day is done,
Oh,girls...
Girls,
Just wanna have fu-un...

They just wanna,
They just wanna....
They just wanna,
They just wanna have fun...

Girls just wanna have fu-un..
They just wanna,
They just wanna....
They just wanna,
They just wanna....
(Have fun..)

They just wanna,
(Girls wanna have fun)
They just wanna....
Oh,girls...
(Wanna have fun....)
Girls just wanna have fu-un.

When the workin',
When the working day is done.
Oh,when the working day is done,
Oh,girls,
Girls just wanna have fu-un.

They just wanna,
They just wanna....
(Oh,girls...)
They just wanna,
(Have fun....)
Oh,girls..
Girls just wanna have fu-un

They just wanna,
They just wanna...
When the working day is done...
