Have you written President Obama a letter? There's a good chance he's read it personally.

"Dear President Obama": The President Reads 10 Letters a Day from the Public, With Policy Ramifications

"Every day President Barack Obama is handed a special purple folder. The folder contains ten letters, and every day President Obama takes time to read them.

Are they from world leaders? From members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff? Members of the intelligence community?

No, these letters have been culled from the thousands the White House Correspondence Office receives each day from Americans who have taken the time to sit down and write to their president.

"They help him focus on the real problems people are facing," says Axelrod. "He really a absorbs these letters, and often shares them with us."

13. Last summer he promised to increase the number of troops in Afghanistan:
Barack Obama yesterday pledged to increase US troops in Afghanistan by a third if he becomes president, sending 10,000 more to reinforce the 33,000 already there.

He was speaking after the US lost nine soldiers at the weekend in the deadliest attack on its forces in the country since 2005.

Obama has promised, soon after becoming president in January, to begin scaling back the 156,000 US troops in Iraq and Kuwait, and to shift the focus to Afghanistan.

He is to fill out his plans in a foreign policy speech in Washington today ahead of his first visit to Iraq and Afghanistan since he launched his presidential bid early last year.

14. Afghanistan is Obama's Vietnam
I hope he enjoys the death and destruction!

I did not vote for more death and destruction. I'm thinking he is nothing more than a shill and a crook. Sorry.

17. I guess voting for Obama hoping that he would do the opposite of what he promised wasn't so smart of
a strategy. Thank you for playing. Better luck next time.

21. it is not the kind of "change" I believe in
and yes, America will pay dearly for this very grave error. Mark my words. If I'd known he was going to pull this off so fast I would have never voted for him, never.

U.S. OUT OF AFGHANISTAN!!! BRING OUR TROOPS HOME NOW!!!

26. did you listen to his campaign speeches?
he talked about increasing troops in Afghanistan
in every one that I heard...which was just about daily!
There was no deception...no "pulling anything off".

Wait... That was Santa Claus.

I asked him to draft Karl Rove and ship him to Iraq.

Well, Mr. President. I'm waiting.

6. I agree with this... I doubt those letters are challenging the policies of the Administration
all that much. Especially if Rahm has any say.

8. You never know.
Back in my younger days I sailed as an engineering officer in the merchant marine. I was on a ship that was on long term charter to the Military Sealift Command, so our mail was handled by the FPO. My wife (then my fiance) was a prolific letter writer, but on a Northern European voyage we didn't get anything. I told her about it when we got back to the U.S., and then went off for a trip to the Far East. Halfway across the Pacific, I'm sitting down for breakfast when the chief mate asks if my fiance's name is XXX. I confirm that it is, and of course ask why. He tells me that we got quite the radiogram the previous evening, and that perhaps I should take a look at it. I drop by the radio shack, and the radio operator confirms that we indeed did get quite the message, but the captain would have to approve my viewing it. I see the captain and he says that I should make a copy of the thing, and that he's never seen anything like it.

The message is addressed to the S.S. Pioneer Contender, with copies to just about every admiral in every command anywhere. The last guy in the queue was the Military Sealift Command officer in Pusan, S. Korea. The first line of the message is

"Presidential interest mail complaint"

Lots of stuff in the body, and the signature is CNO WASHDC (Chief of Naval Operations)

It turns out that my lovely lady had hand written a letter to President Carter complaining about the problems with mail delivery. She included a reminder that he used to be a sailor and how important mail is to morale. When we got to Chinhae we got our mail, and there were forty-some guys on the Contender who thought my fiance was just the living end. They were right then, as they would be today.

So, you just never know. One thing is certain, though; if you don't ask, you won't get.

There is a "good chance" he has read it? The staff culls 10 of the 1000s he receives a day? Is less than 1% a good chance? Of course I totally appreciate him and his work to be in tune with the electorate. But remember it is also possible to win the lottery. (Maybe I'm still bitter about not winning the trip to DC for the inaugural. My essay rocked!)
