sorry this is so late, but can somebody tell me since WHEN "sleeveless" attire can be deemed
"inappropriate"?

I missed this whole thing, only found out about it yesterday-- when did the fashion police dictate that sleeveless is inappropriate, and why?

the whole flap reminds me that some people have wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much time on their hands.

1. It's just jealousy.
Edited on Tue Mar-03-09 04:48 PM by Cleita
Many of the recent first ladies (not Hillary) have had to conceal bat wing arms under long sleeves. Although I do remember Nancy Reagan wearing sleeveless dresses as well.

2. I don't know...when I was a kid you couldn't go to church "sleeveless"...
...but I doubt that is still the case.

Whoever complained is probably over the age of 70.

People that are upset over this just don't have enough to do. They should go volunteer to do something.

43. Nope, you got that way wrong. Older people REMEMBER sleeveless. And it was hats, not sleeves, for
church, that I remember.

41. Some people are perpetually warm-like my husband.
When I met my husband he kept the thermostat @ 55 and wore short sleeve shirts in the winter (Ohio) because he was always hot. Not me, I'm always freezing. When I place my cold hands on hm to warm up he screams-"don't taz me bro".

Yesterday, I took the dogs to run in a nearby park. It was 11 degrees with a bitter north wind. I had 3 layers under my down jacket. I had a wool hat as well as a hood on. I came across a women in her 50's that had no hat, no gloves and was wearing a jacket wide wide 3/4 length sleeves. I asked her if she wasn't freezing and she said she was comfortable.

I don't get it but some people react differently to temperature. I believe how ever folks feel comfortable should be the dress code.

First ladies have been going sleeveless since at least Maime Eisenhower. Jackie Kennedy wore a sleeveless dress to a State of the Union Address too. Big whoop.

Michelle Obama is 44 years old and has awesomely toned arms. I don't blame her for showing them off; nothing wrong with it.

24. what kind of sleeveless do you mean?
Do you mean sleeveless shirts for men or women. Sleeveless attire for women is much more appropriate to wear, because sleeveless men's shirts look like somebody: a) just finished working out, b) just finished working in the lawn or garden, c) lives in a van down by the river.

Sleeveless shirts for men are inappropriate for any social setting more formal than a meeting of friends at a bar or restaurant at work.

26. Jackie Kennedy often wore sleeveless dresses
Googling to find a photo, I found her Wedding Dress which was very close to sleeveless. That would have been wore in a Catholic Church in the 1950s. http://dolcissimaevents.blogspot.com/2009/01/bride-style-icon-jackie-kennedy.html

"Married to 35th president of the US, John F. Kennedy. She was trend setter in the 60s with her “clean suits, sleeveless A-line dresses, and pillbox hat that she often wore”.

http://ummascorner.blogspot.com/2009/03/five-fashion-icons-presidents-wife.html

I remember many women - including my mom - wearing sleeveless shifts to church in the early 1960s - Jackie set the style.

29. I have come to accept that
the haters will never stop the personal attacks on the Obamas. They never stopped attacking FDR and Eleanore either. The crude jokes, whisper campaigns, insults, and slander will not stop.

The haters got nothin'. They have no ideas, and no power. All they have is a bunch of zombie congress vermin, a loud mouthed pig "leader", a token toady as head of the Repub party, and a whole bunch of slime balls on TV peddling lies.

So with nothing, and up against the astonishingly vibrant, intelligent, and capable Obamas, they are going to thrown shit balls.

Besides, these are not the first arms shown by First Ladies, just the best!

In sleeveless dresses.

The only problem I have is how high the thermostat must be to support wearing a sleeveless dress in the winter. Personally, I've got the thermostat set low enough to require sweaters and sweatshirts all the time because I can't afford to keep the house warm enough to wear summer garb in February.
