Republicans Concede Budget Too Hard to Block
Edited on Tue Mar-03-09 05:08 PM by ClarkUSA
Democrats "are expected to begin moving the budget through Congress this month with hopes of winning approval by early April. Congressional Republicans say it's unlikely that they would be able to block the budget because they don't have enough votes," the Wall Street Journal reports.

The reason? "Congress follows special rules for approving the annual budget that make it hard for the minority party to block it. Senate rules requiring 60 votes to end debate are suspended. That requirement had made three Republican senators' support for the stimulus bill crucial, even though Democrats enjoy large majorities in the House and Senate."

Could this have something to do with Republicans' inability to beat back President Obama's budget? A preview of the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll: By a 48% to 20% margin, Americans believe the Democratic Party would do a better job of getting the U.S. out of recession than the Republican Party. When this same question was asked back in 1990, the public was essentially split. The full poll will be out by 6:30 PM ET.

3. But...but...but...
...if the Repugs step back and let Obama have his plan, and it succeeds, they're DOOOOOOOOOMED for the next generation. Their only hope is to cut the administration's proposals down to a point where they lose any chance at effectiveness, then tell everybody "See? We tried the liberal route, and it didn't succeed. Time to return to conservative governance!"

OTOH, the current 48%-20% margin over which party has the correct approach would seem to make it difficult for the G.O.P. to keep up a roadblock. But, when you're chances of regaining power are slim with one approach and none with another, can you really be surprised if they choose the former?

4. Yes, I am a little surprised that Republicans are so politically tone-deaf...

... but I am also delighted that their decades-old strategery is failing with the American voting public.
Moderates like Gov. Huntsman of Utah have the right approach but thank goodness the GOP base will
never listen to him. I am enjoying watching the GOP implode while for the first time in my life, Democrats
are golden. :)
