This is what CONSERVATIVE commentator David Frum states.

There are a few conservatives who are willing to admit (and draw from the wrath of Rush), that Limbmaugh is BAD for the Republican party.

Rush knows what he is doing. The worse conservatives do, the more important Rush becomes as leader of the ardent remnant. The better conservatives succeed, the more we become a broad national governing coalition, the more Rush will be sidelined.

But do the rest of us understand what we are doing to ourselves by accepting this leadership? Rush is to the Republicanism of the 2000s what Jesse Jackson was to the Democratic party in the 1980s. He plays an important role in our coalition, and of course he and his supporters have to be treated with respect. But he cannot be allowed to be the public face of the enterprise – and we have to find ways of assuring the public that he is just one Republican voice among many, and very far from the most important.

4. not quite - despite anyone's personal opinion of Jackson...
... he was a formidable force in two presidential elections as a CANDIDATE.

6. Not to mention a force as an activist
in the 1960s and 1970s. Rush Limbaugh could never give the type of uplifting speech Jackson gave at Clinton's 1996 convention. (I looked in the CSPAN library - and it was only available to purchase, not as a free on-line video)

5. Actually, Jackson was more mainstream and serious
Edited on Thu Mar-05-09 08:15 AM by karynnj
He was a real civil rights activist, allied with other activists. Rush is simply an entertainer playing a demagogue. I'm not sure who the best analog is - none of the really out there LW talking heads have Rush's level of audience or that audience's blind support. To get angry enough, you could say Randi Rhodes. To get big enough, Michael Moore.

8. Jesse actually ran for office.
Something Limbaugh would/could never do because he's a known drug addict. Rush is nothing but a shill for Rush. There is no left wing equivalent.

12. Rush even admitted that he's nothing but a shill for Rush
on his radio show yesterday. A caller asked "this sounds like this is about whats best for Rush" and Rush said "of course."

13. Was Jesse ever that big?
And obviously I mean "importance" and not "girth."

Granted, I was 11 so my memory is a little fuzzy, but I wasn't aware that the party ever kowtowed to Jesse like the GOP does to Rush.

I dunno ... Jesse lost me at "cut his nuts off" so perhaps I'm biased.

14. Yes, he was
Mama calls Jesse, messy Jesse, because of his tendency to say and do some of the damnedest things.

When I heard him say the nuts thing, I laughed for a couple hours. It didn't strike me as fundamentally different than those rhymes he comes up with.

I'd compare his ability to say or do the wildest things imaginable to Joe Biden. Why would Biden say the 7/11 thing? Because he was thinking it.

Why does Jesse go off the deep end sometimes? Because his mind went there.

They are impolitic politicians.

15. Uh-uh, i'm not diggin that comparison.....
.... do NOT compare Jesse to MY Joe!!! :)

Not even close! Joe's a little too honest sometimes .... what Jesse said good old fashioned "haterade" (I just learned that word from Michael Steel hee hee.) And considering the fact that he was saying about a man then poised to become the first African American President, his words were also self-defeatist.

Save your crocodile tears Jesse. Get them out of my election night montage!

18. Unlike Rush, Jesse helped -- INCLUSION vs. EXCLUSION
Edited on Thu Mar-05-09 04:15 PM by Numba6
Jackson practices the politics of inclusion, & helped increase Democratic turnout

Rush practices the politics of exclusion -- & is keeping GOP tethered to a falling rock

Frum's right about Limbaugh hurting -- but he's still a fucking self serving piece of shit

(Do you see how I fell about asshats like Frum or do I need to be blunt?)
