Obama to Appear Sunday on '60 Minutes'
Obama to Appear Sunday on '60 Minutes'
By Howard Kurtz

President Obama may be lightening things up with a visit to Jay Leno this week, but no one can accuse him of ducking of ducking tougher journalistic forums.

Obama has agreed to sit down with "60 Minutes" for an interview that will air Sunday. CBS's Steve Kroft will be questioning the president. The interview has not yet been announced.

The president has drawn some skeptical reaction for his decision to head to Leno's "Tonight Show" couch at a time when the economy is in dire straits and he is under fire for failing to block $165 million in bonuses to AIG executives despite a federal bailout of the company. That subject is certain to come up in the "60 Minutes" questioning.

Despite early predictions that Obama would largely bypass the mainstream media and conduct a YouTube presidency, he has repeatedly made himself available to traditional news organizations. Obama has granted interviews to the network anchors, PBS's Jim Lehrer, the New York Times, the Washington Post editorial board, and NBC's Matt Lauer at the Super Bowl, while also chatting up black and Hispanic journalists and talk show hosts.

How will the president fare on "60 Minutes" at a time when his administration is on the defensive? The clock is ticking.

1. Good move ... better than giving a speech
"60 Minutes" is still "appointment television" for a
lot of people on Sunday night (not to mention internet
viewing on Monday morning). This will be a good chance
for him to make his case to the public -- WITHOUT the
teleprompter!

5. Oh, there WILL be speeches....
... well, maybe not SPEECHES .... but they've got fireside chats and possibly another presser lined up.

Go get 'em Sir!

4. You know Kroft has to be all geeked out....
.... starting off in the Obama kitchen in Chicago, ending up in the White House.

He played his part in helping the man get elected. Thank you Steve!

6. Good. And I'm still happy he's skipping that dinner. Can you
imagine if he'd gone to that? Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

8. He's making a big publicity push over the next 5 days.
First, he's visiting a CA alternative energy plant.

Second, he's giving a speech a townhall meeting later that day.

Third, then he's going on Jay Leno.

Fourth, he's going to appear on 60 Minutes.

9. How Many Interviews Did Dubya/Clinton/Bush Sr. Give In First 100 Days?
I can't even recall a single interview that Dubya gave in his first 100 days, and despite his technical proficiency, Obama has shown a willingness to sit down with old fashioned media.

10. Looking forward to it.
I'd rather hear him speak anyday, as opposed to those bloviating dumbass pundits on the cable chatter channels!
