I get so depressed by these phony outrage eruptions
It's like a bunch of buzzards on a fence, waiting for someone to slip up. The cycle goes on for 48 hours to a week, until your eyes glaze over. The vultures know that Obama meant no offense, but hammer this bullshit to death anyway.

I realize we're not the only country that goes crazy for some offhand remark, but it just makes me feel like I live in a nation of screaming toddlers.

2. the faux outrage is still going on about Leno?
Just try to turn it off. It is depressing though, because it blurs out all the good things President Obama is doing.

Not watching the screamers works for me.

4. Maybe I am just battle worn
But I find it kinda funny and somewhat of a challenge. Then of course, there are the total butt-wipes who are a waste of time.

5. Don't let it get you down. Just think, he survived this
During the presidential primary season, then-candidate Barack Obama’s poor performance at a bowling alley briefly threatened to blossom into a full-blown disaster.

Also, excuse me while I...

6. I get so depressed by people who brush off what others are saying.
When someone says something bothers them, they feel the need to belittle it instead of ignoring it or, you know, considering it for three minutes before ignoring it, instead of making mocking comments and precious eye-rolls. It makes me feel like I live in a nation of assholes. Oh wait, I do!

7. Do you think "these phony outrage eruptions"...
... might be a little less severe if "the buzzards" and "screaming toddlers" were acknowledged in their "poutrage"?

Can't we at least concede that many of the people who were offended by the special olympics quip have, if not a legitimate point, at least a right to their honest opinion?

Clearly, many people who are otherwise supporters of Obama and progressive goals in general were hurt by that comment. I share some of that distress. I want to hear them out and I also hope Obama makes amends.

Personally, I think a little more empathy and a little less "STFU!!!" would be a really great improvement.

8. If they're honestly offended, they should except Obama's honest apology.
If they don't, well, I say that's probable cause to believe they're not really offended, and don't really care about mentally handicapped people.

Honestly.

10. Here's a link to the LAT article on his apology
http://www.latimes.com/news/la-na-obama-apology20-tott-sl,0,6456035.story

Apologizing to Tim Shriver, the president of Special Olympics is a good first step.

However, I suggest that he was not the only one offended.

On a personal level, as a boardmember of an affiliate organization, I'm going to need ammunition to mollify the rest of the boardmembers at the next meeting. I fully expect someone to demand that we send a letter expressing unhappiness about this.

I would find defending it easier if
a) a simple statement from the President to the people who found it hurtful existed
b) less reason to share their distress.

Contrary to the DU circle-the-wagons instincts, some people with a dog in this fight and who do really care, ARE really offended.

17. He apologized. He called Sergent Shriver to apologize
He has vowed to do work with the special olympics at the white house.

Do you want him to cover himself in sack cloth and ashes?

I miss these things sometimes.

13. "Meant no offense" isn't the same as "gave no offense."
Edited on Sat Mar-21-09 06:06 AM by Orsino
He's merely paying a political price for a moment's thoughtlessness. His apology will mitigate this, but it can't exempt him.

Our president's a man. Even one as smart as Obama can't avoid a few mistakes--but it's not as though he dismantled the economy or started a war for profit.

16. Republicans have one very simple goal...
Make sure Obama fails...

That's it...and with the help of a lazy and complicit media...they may succeed...

The days when Republicans might have had any sense of duty are long gone...

They are simply interested in regaining power along with the money and influence that brings with it...

18. Right -- notice the lack of objection when Repugs called "morons"
Now, I do happen to think the Repugs are out to lunch, but there does seem to be an inconsistency ...

And, wow, there are just so many more important subjects available for discussion especially given an apology was made before the remark was aired.
