Obama messed up. It might be funny to say that to your close friends but you don't say it to people who it might hurt. And you don't say it to the whole nation.

I am actually really surprised he said it. It comes across a little insensitive.

Does it change my mind about Obama?? Hell no. He is a great man and 1000 times the leader Bush was.

But dismmissing the media coverage or the people who are upset is wrong.

I can image what this place would have been like it Bush would have said it.

Let's not turn in to a double standard that only the Freepers would be proud of.

Particularly since Obama was making an appearance on Leno, he should have been sensitive to liberal media's standards of political correctness. What was President Obama thinking? In Hollywood no less!

Such random comments about Obama's bowling and the special Olympics are never made today. Such humor is an anachronism. We should reject his apology, and start a march. I was so outraged about the bonuses, and now this. Count me in!

By the outrage, which continues long after Obama evidently apologized, one would get the impression it was intentional.

This has the earmark of a RW hissy fit.

that the actions of the President in regard to his budget and him not executing any mentally handicapped people yet would make him more immune to critism on this issue than it would President Bush.

Kind of like Biden's clean and articulate comment blew over better than if it would have been said by Mitch McConnel.

Because Biden has a history of doing the right things and McConnel doesn't.

11. Bush never would have apologized
or made a call to the Director for the Special Olympics.

Recognizing error in self is the mark of a mature and secure personality.

The audience was notably taken aback... just a small ruffle compared to the outstanding ovations he received for his other remarks. As a comedian, Leno knows that was a joke that fell flat.

I was surprised by the comment. But, if you think about it, all he really meant was that he felt 'handicapped' at a sport for which he has very little skill. Handicap is not a bad word. Golfers use it all the time.

If you're going to maintain a prickly attitude, you will not only make the freepers proud; you will also display a major characteristic they possess.

Edited on Sat Mar-21-09 03:18 AM by Hippo_Tron
Obama's "joke" was insensitive and stupid. I am glad that he called and apologized for it immediately.

But when Bush does it, a mere apology is not sufficient. Bush belongs to the Republican Party which voluntarily chooses to be the Party of Intolerance. When you choose to be a member of that party, it is entirely reasonable to presume that you are a bigot and that whenever you make even the slightest insensitive remark that it is because your bigotry is showing. When the Republicans stop being the Party of Intolerance then I will accept their apologies in these instances like I accept Obama's apology. Until then, I will continue to trash Republicans whenever they do this and merely ask for an apology from Democrats when they do this. Belonging to the Bigot Party has consequences.

45. President Obama does way more right than wrong
Edited on Sat Mar-21-09 03:30 PM by loyalsister
I supported him from the start because he is a person who invites us to hold him accountable. I think most people here who had a reaction to the comment itself accept that action and are ready to move on.
And yet... we are berated by people who complain about the fact that we had a reaction in the first place.
Have any of these people not had a reaction or complaint about President Obama? Were they ALL with him from the beginning?
What is the problem here?
He is transforming the presidency back to what it is supposed to be by holding himself to a higher standard. He understands and values criticism even from people who nondisabled may not expect vote or care. He saw it coming and apologized.
He believes we should abandond stereotypes and gets it when he fumbles and one falls out of his own mouth. It's admirable.
What is not admirable is the assumption that it's okay if he doesn't cut funding.
That is absolutely not true.
Just like the fact that the Bushes signed the original ADA and following ADA restoration acts doesn't make any of their other deeds go away.

46. wish I could recommend this twice
He did call the head of the Special Olympics directly after the show, before it even aired, and apologized. Reportedly, they had a good chat and patched things up, though the Special Olympics guy's comments afterwords indicated that he still thought the comment shouldn't have been made in the first place (rightly so).

And it sounds like there's going to be a Special Olympics basketball or bowling event at the White House sometime. (My thought on first hearing his comment was, "There's a bowling tournament in Obama's future...")

51. I have to admit, I would have thought Bush
was an idiot.

I might even have been rather disgusted.

I am a little disappointed that Obama said what he said, but the difference for me is that I really believe inside that Bush is a mean-spirited and nasty person whereas I don't think that about Obama.

I think he (Obama) tried to make a humbling statement about his abilities and he just did it the wrong way, then perhaps a couple of seconds later realized it and probably even thought, "Oh shit!!!" but by then there's no graceful way to correct it without making it even worse...something that's happened to me many times.
