If you are really upset about the Special Olympics comment
Than I suggest you take a look at your state or municipalities care system for those with disabilities. Somtimes you need to hire a lawyer to get the help you need as a parent (speaking for my mother and father) for services from your school district. The kids who don't have parents who can hire lawyers or can't constantly be fighting the system unless they are in a class room with a kid who can alot of times don't get good services. When the children grow into adults and you can no longer care for them like you used to there is another maze to navigate and like anything else some programs and group homes are better than others. Also because alot of people with disabilities can't speak out for themselves, they are sometimes abused in those facilities.

Since this is a group that a large portion can't vote, when the state needs to cut things, they always seem to take a hit if there aren't people watching out for them.

Some states are better than other states.

If you want to be an advocate for people with disabilities advocate for things that actually help them. Not going nuts because the President said something stupid.

2. Well they generally fall into one of 3 groups
Edited on Sat Mar-21-09 07:51 AM by AllentownJake
Biggest group are people who don't like President Obam

Second Largest group are people who are offended but won't do anything other than be offended these people are offended often.

The smallest group are people who actually care about this issue and are offended. Trying to direct them to the right place.

5. Thank you! Some people need to get a life and then actually do something with it...
...instead of sitting around bitching on the Internet and pretending they are somehow helping the world by doing so.

FYI for all the people who aren't letting this go... YOU ARE NOT ACCOMPLISHING A GOD DAMN THING OTHER THAN WASTING DU FORUM DATABASE SPACE.

7. Bite me!

The lack of awareness and consciousness of disability issues and discrimination against disabled folk is rampant at DU. Ya'll just helped prove it.

8. Its one thing to be conscious and compassionate, its another thing to harp on the trivial...
And thats exactly what the whole issue with the comment is, its TRIVIAL. Continuing on with a bunch of "do nothing" feelings of anger isn't helping one friggin person, disabled or not. There is nothing more to be gained from it. Prove me wrong. Show me what there is to gain.

15. My biggest beef with this entire incident
Is President Obama is probably going to be the best this community has ever had so far on these issues....and people need to take that into account when they criticise him over words. My concern is are people getting the help they need to lead better and fuller lives, not a bad joke which might have been hurtful, but saying nice things all the time and showing up for photo ops and than cutting the funding is more disgusting than any joke Obama ever told and those people don't get called out on it and when they do they use the photo-op to show how much they care.

6. Good points.

There are advocacy groups, often parent-based, in most communities.
Local Special Olympics groups are planning now for spring track and field events.

Every darn one of them can use help.

9. Especially when you consider Palin refusing money for special needs education in Alaska.
Which is worse, a flippant remark followed by an apology or the action taken by someone for political gain, the action being the refusal of $170 million in funds for disadvantaged and special needs citizens in Alaska?

13. I just saw where my State of Ohio is going to allow slots at horse racing locations for this.

I am all for it! Let those who wish to play the slots do so and help our schools and special education classes in particular.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio State Racing Commission has unanimously voted in favor of a proposal to allow video slot machines at seven racetracks.

Thursday's vote sends a recommendation to lawmakers asking them to approve the plan, which the commission says would create 150 new state employee jobs and bring in $1.3 billion for the state by 2013. About $625 million of that would go into a fund for primary and secondary schools.

Track owners have said they want the Legislature to legalize slot machines, saying they need other sources of revenue to raise purse levels to those offered in neighboring states that have slots.

Previous attempts by individual lawmakers to legalize video slot machines at Ohio racetracks have been repeatedly rejected.
