Obama skips major papers: No NYT, WaPo, WSJ, USA Today


During President Obama's second East Room news conference, he took questions from 13 reporters over about an hour -- that's the same as during his first presser on Feb. 9.

But in quite a departure from the first presser -- and White House protocol -- Obama skipped over the nation's top newspapers. Indeed, there were no questions from the NY Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal or USA Today. That might not sit well with the already insecure newspaper industry.

In exchange, Obama opened things up to a wider variety of outlets, including Spanish-language television, a military news outlet, and black-oriented media. It's another example of the White House going over the typical Washington press corps "filter."

It's like telling them to STFU and being polite and courteous at the same time.

I thought his answer was brilliant and even after the dude gave the follow-up it got even better.

The American people want stem cell research and I'm sure after the Presiden't response they are even more behind it!

....because he did a press conference with regional papers that ... get this ... wasn't on the schedule!!! HOW DARE HE!!! lol

they were a lil too full of themselves this past weekend.

I'd rather him not lend them credibility, but I trust he did what he felt was right.

I can't remember what the question was either.

I am sure the POTUS recognizes the threat to newspapers and maybe this is an attempt to bring inclusion of these other media sources to the press conference. He has shown he can handle any press corps. He doesn't have to be like the last one who said "bring 'em on"...he just does it.
