Nuclear proliferation and our role
Edited on Sun Apr-05-09 09:45 AM by NOW tense
Dear Mr. President.

Perhaps our responsibility as the only government that has ever used a nuclear weapon on others is to give a speech at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. Although I am generations removed from such inhumanity, I feel, we as nation should face what we did. We as a nation know from the aggressor’s standpoint what a nuclear bomb can do. I realize no U.S. President has ever apologized for our past mistakes involving foreign affairs. I think as our leader, it is time to apologize to our Japanese friends. I think it is time that we acknowledge what it means to destroy generations of innocent victims.

I am asking you, Barack Obama, to go and give a speech. I am asking you to stop in Japan and tell the world that nuclear weapons should never be used again.

I believe that as citizens of Earth, we look like hypocritical old men. I really don’t care for the stories of how our use of nuclear weapons ended the War. It was in that moment that we “won” the War, that we lost a piece of our humanity. No longer should we stand up, demanding that no one use nuclear weapons when only we have done so and have never apologized. I believe that we can no longer pretend to move forward as a faithful partner in the creation of a brighter future for our world without acknowledging our role in some of its most tragic history. All nations have much to apologize for in the last century, and we should lead by example. In doing so, we might gain the trust of other nations who wish to engage in an open and fruitful dialogue about the ways in which the peoples of our planet should proceed from this point on, to preserve human dignity and value life even within the contexts of international conflict. Having learned the painful lessons of previous generations who, drunk on war, have caused great harm, it is now time to move brightly toward a world day of true reconciliation. It is our time to envision and create Peace on Earth.

I don’t believe you are a messiah but have watched you, as our nation’s leader, step upon the world’s stage with great purpose and integrity. I encourage you to seize this moment in your presidency to continue your call for an end to fear based decision making by assuring the citizens of the world that our nation, having been sobered by the lessons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has resolved never again to deploy weapons of such indiscriminate destruction. Such a declaration would help to promote feelings of trust and confidence as we move forward as a planetary community. This is essential, as every person’s emotional reactions to life’s daily experiences here on Earth , influence their actions and thus, create our future .

I think we as planet must concentrate on peace, if we as a species are going to survive. We should realize that the business of trying to save this giant, spinning blue marble which we call home is the most important task at hand.

P.S. I think you are a great President so far. I am just asking you to become an even better one.
