Gov. Rick Perry (R-Clown) requests federal aid, declares sovereignty
Edited on Wed Apr-15-09 10:34 AM by ProSense

RHETORIC VS REALITY....

Following up on an earlier item, Texas Gov. Rick Perry's (R) speech yesterday on his unwillingness to accept the "oppressive hand" of the federal government has caused something of a stir. It also, as it turns out, offers another example of conservative hypocrisy.

After all, there's Perry's rhetoric...

"I believe the federal government has become oppressive. It's become oppressive in its size, its intrusion in the lives of its citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state. <...>

"We think it's time to draw the line in the sand and tell Washington that no longer are we going to accept their oppressive hand in the state of Texas. That's what this press conference, that's what these Texans are standing up for. There is a point in time where you stand up and say enough is enough, and I think Americans, and Texans especially have reached that point."

... and there's Perry's reality.

Yes, ol' Rick just can't stand that "oppressive" federal bureaucracy that keeps "interfering" with Texas, except when he needs its help.

Edited title to correspond to timing.

3. As a Texan...
I can't help but be embarrassed by his behavior. On the other hand, I also can't help but laugh at it. Even Republicans hate him here. I think his little rhetorical outburst on abandoning the Union is possibly the most hypocritical thing I've ever seen, given how much he was crying for federal aide during Hurricanes Rita and Ike.

7. If he is really serious then the federal government should comply.
Provided

Will no longer receive assistance from the FBI, FEMA, OSHA, HUD, Veterans Affairs or any other federal agency.

Farmers and farm corporations will no receive subsidies for any crops grown in Texas.

8. ALL federal facilities in the state will be defunded. Agencies will be
relocated. Military bases will be closed and stripped, and personnel relocated to the USA.

Works for me. TX has been a drain on our finances for a long time.

12. Forgot about the military.
Imagine how many would move out of the state of Texas when those jobs are moved out of the state and they lose any sales revenue. There would also be a lot of empty houses and apartments.

With fewer residents they would need fewer law enforcement, teachers, and state workers. The USA would only have to deliver mail to one location in Texas and Texas would be responsible to deliver the mail themselves.

14. Don't forget the U.S. military bases, and the Border Patrol.
Texas can manage its own national security, thank you very much. Also, no more U.S. presidents from Texas. Woo hoo!

9. Palin called Alaska a "sovereign state" in a statement Olbermann read a couple
weeks ago and he thought it was just another sign of her ignorance, saying he didn't know what she meant by that.

13. Would she be hypocritical by making that statement and then run for any federal office?

15. There's a distinction
In the stimulus bill there are strings attached to the money. Texas currently has a budget surplus, but Perry is afraid that in a couple of years when this federal money runs out, they'll be expected to continue to fund the programs out of state coffers.

That's different than requesting federal help for disaster or help in protecting the Texas border from the on going fighting in Mexico.

17. You're probably right. Still, if he's serious about sovereignty, there is no distinction,
and he's free to refuse the stimulus.

An Offer Republican Governors Can Refuse

Refusing the stimulus doesn't bolster his case for sovereingty.
