That dog seems super-hyper
Reminds me of my dear departed dog, Buddy, who was always a handful but lovable at the same time.

Every pic I've seen of him walking w/ the Obama's show him pulling the leash-holder forcefully. Wonder if they'll try to train him.

1. Dog will need some leash training but will always be a handful.
Not a great choice of breed for a busy family in the city, but it was gifted to them and I'm sure the POTUS has the resources to see that the dog has plenty of activity and is always happy to be with them.

They love to run and play.

3. Puppies need a large fenced area where they can run and play
safely with the kids without the restraint of a leash. Particularly in the case of a large energetic breed of dog. Leash lessons should be conducted when the pup is tired and calm. It's too bad no one has advised the Obamas of this requirement.

4. And you know the Obamas are ignorant of their dog's needs and exactly what kind of routine
they have planned for their dog.. how??

16. The Obamas are inexperienced dog owners.
No one in their family has ever owned a dog.

I did not call them ignorant. Kindly refrain from putting words in my mouth.

They are following advice given to them by experienced dog people, and I find it odd that no one among them has suggested a fenced area to the Obamas. Do you see a fence? Most dog breeders and rescue groups will not adopt a dog to an owner without a fenced yard, the requirement more stringent for high energy breeds.

22. I'm sure they have been completely briefed and have read all about
the breed.

They probably have a Dog Trainer that eagerly comes to the WH.

18. That is a good point.
I wonder... is the ugly fence that W installed still up? And if not, wasn't there another original fence/wall surrounding the grounds?

That makes me feel better. Perhaps Bo was on a leash simply for the introduction to the family and to keep him from jumping on the reporters.

21. I don't believe that fence is spaced small enough to keep the dog in.

5. "A good dog is a tired dog." Its an old adage but true.
Someone should wear Bo out during the day so he can be more relaxed and the family can get to know him.

Right now he's too rambunctious for little girls who never had a dog before - the smaller one looks like she's afraid of him.

For folks that never had a pet - not even a bird - he's going to be a wild child until they get used to his high energy. He needs to get tons of exercise so he calms down a little bit.

8. They'll train themselves once they've gotten past the stage where
they're so gaga over him that they let him have his way. We've all been there, done that.

9. Everything I've read about the breed confirms they are high energy. Kennedy
had Bo trained before the Obamas got him.

11. HE'S A PUPPY
there's someone on the staff who'll get assigned to wearing this dog out every day, because the kids won't do it (no kids anywhere willingly walk a dog) - it's a great job for an intern.

and the pulling can be fixed instantly with a gentle leader harness.

Puppy probably needs to be controlled a bit more...but it's early days yet.

17. I've been getting that all morning. Had to reset my security settings
and then all the posts I had posted suddenly appeared, except not in the My DU list. Weird. Now I'm going back to every thread I tried to post in to make sure they didn't multiply x 3 because that has happened to other people here even when they didn't hit "post" more than once.

20. And I attempted to answer a post
entitled "Doesn't the whitehouse already have a fence around it?"

This post inexplicably disappeared, but here's my response to it anyways:

That is a good point.

I wonder... is the ugly fence that W installed still up? And if not, wasn't there another original fence/wall surrounding the grounds?

26. "Active" breeds are like that..
He's still got some months of puppy left in him, but he's a bounder..a galloper.. and will probably always be.. (not exactly the kind of pooch those two little girls probably really wanted)..

a female miniature poodle, brought to them as a 7-8 wk old puppy would have been a perfect fit for them..but they will have to bond with their Dad's bonkers-doggie...that pooch will be Dad's dog...
