Six Degrees Of Separation + The President

dear barack obama,

i may not be able to get this message to you directly, but i hope it does indeed get to you.

i have an idea.

malcolm gladwell in his book "the tipping point" refers to a concept called the broken windows theory, which states that by fixing just the windows you can fix the entire neighborhood...how small things can make a big difference.

"It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled - Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.” - you (barack obama)

and that's where the idea began.

the way i see it, it's time for some heart. the fix to the problems begins by fixing ourselves. we need an approach of hope, not fear. we need not imagine the lines that divide us, but see the loves that unify us...to see ourselves as a part of a whole. to see that we don't just live in the united states of america, we are the united states of america. or maybe a better way to put it, we are the "states united of america."

let us all see that.

"but i am not barack obama," you say. that's exactly the point.

you know someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows barack obama. everyone does, at every level of our society, because we are all at least six degrees of separation from each other.

and so a stranger asks a giant favor...you are the starting point. the first degree. please pass this idea along to the president and in doing so, you will be the one spreading the hope to everyone. i have faith in this and i truly hope you do also.
