Interior announces $750M to restore national parks

By MATTHEW DALY
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says $750 million in economic stimulus money will go to restore and repair national parks, including $30 million to fix the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall.

Other projects announced Wednesday include $26 million to repair buildings and a seawall at New York's Ellis Island, where millions of immigrants first entered the country; $5 million to refurbish Philadelphia's Independence Hall; and $54.7 million for dam removal and others projects at Olympic National Park in Washington state.

Salazar said the announcement, timed with observances of Earth Day, dramatized the Obama administration's commitment to restore and protect America's most special places. The projects are expected to save or create at least 20,000 jobs.

The money is part of the overall $787 billion stimulus package that Congress passed earlier this year.

3. That old dam in the Olympic Peninsula killed
off a run of the largest King salmon in this nation. The Elwha River King Salmon. The Elwha River originates from a glacier on Mount Olympus in Washington State. I go camping on the Elwha River every year and I have been waiting for this decrepit dam to be removed and the fish restored.
The returning salmon were in the 100# range.
Yes...100 pounds! There is still some stock left to re-create this salmon run from eggs!
This is a long time coming.
This is fantastic news!:woohoo:

9. No...I have never seen one...
The two dams on the Elwha were built about 90 years ago. They totally fucked up a pristine river's watershed. Removal will be the biggest to date restoration ever.
Fortunately, almost all of the river is in a national park, so it was never logged or ruined. The spruce trees and cedars there are as big around as your car. Seriously.

6. I just heard the President's speech on
cnn livestream and it was very exciting regarding clean and renewable energy heading into our future with a "Win Win" situation!

Are we "ready to be part of a mission"? To reinvigorate our Planet and create new jobs in the process that won't be out-sourced?

8. If the Bush administration had done the upkeep necessary
we wouldn't be stuck with such a huge bill right now. Better late than never but these facilities should have been repaired when they needed it and not put off.
