I hope that we stay on issue. The issue being that the use of torture is unacceptable regardless if it produces some intelligence of value. Democrats can not allow the Republicans to justify the use of torture by claiming that it produced intelligence that saved American lives. This will be the main thrust of the Republicans' spin as already demonstrated by Cheney. There argument will be simple: They save American lives.

2. grrr
if they just paid attention to the warning signs pre-9/11 by exercising caution instead of blatantly ignoring it, there wouldn't be a need for torture. :banghead:

3. And someone needs to ask them where the torture justification will
end. Can we now start torturing murder suspects/rapists/pedophiles in order to potentially save lives?

4. The results are completely immaterial. Does genocide yield results?

5. Slavery produced lots of cotton
That does not change the fact that it is morally reprehensible. The ends never justify the means.

6. The law against torture was not predicated on the assumption that
torture was only illegal if it failed to produce useful information. Simple as that. nt

7. This type of reasoning dominates the thinking of fascists. The ends justify the means.
I don't want to exaggerate, but I do believe that our school systems have failed in recent years to teach basic ethics. Not religion, but ethics.

I am also of the opinion that far too many churches have also concentrated on devisive issues while ignoring the basics. I may be naive but what kind of world would this be if we just attempted to keep the Ten Commandments and the primary one of Christianity of treating others as you would wish to be treated. It would indeed be as near a paradise as we could hope for. No lying, cheating, stealing, murder, no unchecked greed; you can only dream.
