Biden worries about son in Iraq

Biden worries about son in Iraq

April 26, 2009 07:00 PM EST | AP

WASHINGTON — Vice President Joe Biden said he worries about his son who is serving in Iraq, but tries to not look at the ongoing war solely as a father.

President Barack Obama called Biden "very valuable" during a profile that aired Sunday on CBS News' "60 Minutes."

"You know, Joe's not afraid to tell me what he thinks," Obama said. "And that's exactly what I need, and exactly what I want."

In a wide-ranging profile, Biden said he remains physically affectionate with his two adult sons, 40-year-old Beau and 39-year-old Hunter Biden, and doesn't shy from calling them "honey."

"I think they feel good about it," Biden said. "When we see each other we hug and kiss."

He said he is proud of his sons, including Beau, a captain in the Army National Guard serving in Iraq. But Biden also said he worries about his son's safety.

"I've ridden home with too many dead young men and women in caskets and it's just impossible to not associate with that," said Biden, whose daughter and first wife died in a 1972 automobile accident. "I mean, you think as a parent, God forbid, how would I, how would I respond?"

To me, he seems like he'd be a great father.

7. Yeah, he is a great Dad.
To see him actually worry about his son being over there was touching.

8. I would be worried too if one of my sons were in Iraq.
A person would be lying if they said anything different and I think many do lie. Maybe they are just fooling themselves.

11. I've got about 7 seven good friends over there right now and I'm not worried.
Unless you are an Army infantry in Mosul or Sadr City, there is not a lot to be worried about.

All my Marine friends in Al Anbar continue to tell me how completely bored they are. The best phrase I have heard is "If I am going to spend 7 months of my life in this country away from my family, some insurgent should have the common decency to throw a few rounds may way every now and then." Obviously, this was said in jest but describes the mood I keep hearing.

I'm sure Joe is worried, but the reality is his son is not going out on patrols in Mosul or Sadr City as a JAG officer in Iraq. He is probably in the Green Zone working on the MNC-I legal staff or a one of the bigger bases, like Balad, with a group of Triple Canopy PSD folks guarding him if he has to leave the Green Zone.
