Obama says: “Now, the Freedom of Choice Act is not highest legislative priority.”
Here. See also this article entitled: “Obama says abortion rights law not a top priority.” Contrast that with his words when he was a candidate:

“The first thing I’d do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. That’s the first thing that I’d do.” – Senator Barack Obama, speaking to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, July 17, 2007. Watch him say that in the clip below.

This is really important, because as rosy as things look for the Democratic majority in Congress today, things can change quickly. The Freedom of Choice Act needs to be moved forward now.

2. Just curious what your opinion is on this... do you think Obama should press Congress to
get FOCA to his desk, or should he focus on unwanted pregnancy reduction right now as he is doing?
The quote is from his press conference last Thursday by the way.

3. He made a campaign promise - he needs to keep it. Women's bodies should not be political
Women are underrepresented in the US. We rank 71 in the world for gender parity.

WHen women are equally represented in government things change - women bring different ideas to the table; violence, children, health care, child care.

We have been at a disadvantage because we are the underrepresented majority.

Abortion is a political wedge issue that is maintained by male leadership, and Obama just kept it going.

He has a chance to stop this.

Read below. WHy would a liberal progressive not sign this?

"The Freedom of Choice Act (H.R. 1964/S. 1173) was a bill in the 110th United States Congress which "declares that it is the policy of the United States that every woman has the fundamental right to choose to bear a child; terminate a pregnancy prior to fetal viability; or terminate a pregnancy after viability when necessary to protect her life or her health.
It prohibits a federal, state, or local governmental entity from denying or interfering with a woman's right to exercise such choices; or discriminating against the exercise of those rights in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services, or information. Provides that such prohibition shall apply retroactively."

It likely is still a priority.

Women are the majority of the people. We demand and deserve equality and we deserve the right not have the right to control our bodies held over our heads every election season. To do so only maintains the male status quo of government.

10. Its not. And why should it be? How many battles do you want Obama to fight at one time?
This is not a fight we should be having before Healthcare, Energy, Credit Cards, Mortgage, and Education are done. Its just not.

Everything doesn't have to be done in his first yr in office.

And you're right. They aren't going to have the majority very long if he keeps having these contentious battles all at once like FOCA

I know, he doesn't want to enrage the antis because he wants them voting for him. The same reason he stood on a stage, twice I believe, with Donnie McClurkin.

Gays, women - gender parity is necessary for both these groups of people. Male leadership isn't cutting it.

that Planned Parenthood continues to hold his feet to the fire and convey to him just how important this bill is.

And as for Ann Bartow, not to play "attack the messenger", since I do think that some of what she says here is valid, but I'll never understand why so many feminist professors associate with the New Agenda. Did Bartow really write this, as their site indicates? Obamabots? I'll wait to hear what Planned Parenthood says, thanks.

(Bartow On Hillary becoming SOS)

http://thenewagenda.net/author/ann-bartow/

"If she flourishes in the role, as I fully expect her to, it will positively remind everyone of her talent and abilities. The more odious Obamabots would need to stop hating on her (or at least ramp it down), since dumping all over an effective cabinet member would be stupid and counter-productive, and would actually make Obama look bad. Her achievements would also be an emphatic “eff you” to her harshest critics. Succeeding is a wonderful form of revenge — no pesky bloodstains and all kinds of rewards."

edit: She did, to her credit it seems, vote for Obama. But I think the use of Obamabot just makes her look silly, since she is a law professor. I'm sure she means well, but as a whole, I am usually confounded by the New Agenda.

21. Planned Parenthood is more sensible than New Agenda
They understand not everything can happen this hot minute and he has women's interests at heart.

President Obama’s First 100 Days: Women’s Health Becomes a National Priority

* Health Care Reform — President Obama convened the White House Forum on Health Care Reform, signaling his commitment to ensuring every American has access to quality, affordable health care. PPFA President Cecile Richards was invited to participate and share how the organization, as a leading health care provider, sees the need to reform the nation’s health care system to ensure that access to women’s health is a priority.

* Affordable Birth Control —The president signed legislation to restore access to affordable birth control for millions of college students and low-income women, and help ensure access to affordable contraception for millions of women, especially in these tough economic times.

* Budget Priorities — In his proposed budget, the president included a commonsense Medicaid waiver to expand family planning under Medicaid and called for evidence-based, medically accurate sex education.

* Global Gag Rule — With the stroke of a pen, President Obama overturned the global gag rule and once again allowed millions of women around the world access to critical reproductive health care services.

* HHS Midnight Rule — The Obama administration began the process of rescinding the Bush administration’s midnight HHS regulation that limits the rights of patients to receive complete and accurate health care information and services.

* Secretary of State — With the appointment of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, President Obama signaled his commitment to approach the issues of women’s health and rights, family planning, and global poverty with the seriousness and commitment they deserve. Secretary Clinton understands that improving the status of women is not simply a moral imperative; it is necessary to building democracies around the globe.

* Health and Human Services Secretary — The president, nominated longtime champion of women’s health, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, to be the secretary of HHS. Governor Sebelius has been a strong advocate for health care reform and has a proven track record of supporting increased access to affordable health care and commonsense prevention policies that improve health outcomes.

* White House Council on Women and Girls — The president established the White House Council on Women and Girls to focus on a wide range of issues facing American women and their families, including the high rate of unintended pregnancies and the alarming number of sexually transmitted infections.

* Plan B — Under the Obama administration, the FDA now supports over-the-counter access to Plan B (emergency contraception) for women 17 years and older.

* AIDS Outreach — President Obama has made a strong commitment to developing a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy that includes all federal agencies. The strategy will be designed to reduce the number of HIV infections, increase access to health care, and reduce HIV-related health disparities to address the growing HIV/AIDS crisis among women and girls in the United States.

20. here's how i see it... I know this will sound a little bit too defensive, but it's my interpretation
Edited on Sat May-02-09 03:42 PM by Aloha Spirit
Obama did say that the first thing he'd do as President to protect access to abortion would be to sign FOCA, and that has not been the case. So, in that way he did break a promise.
However, he didn't promise that the first thing he'd do in the absolute sense would be to sign FOCA, as anti-choice groups claimed during the campaign.
Obama has accomplished a lot to protect reproductive rights, starting with the easy stuff instead of starting with the hard stuff.
He restored access to affordable contraception, lifted the global gag rule, installed Sebelius at HHS, rescinded the midnight rule, got OTC access to emergency contraception, and created a White house council on women and girls.
So I do agree that he broke the promise to make FOCA the first thing he does to protect access to safe abortion, but I don't think that demonstrates his lack of will on the issue.
Just that he has decided to start with the least controversial actions where he has more concensus.
Obama's legislative priority for this year is healthcare.
He and his team have demonstrated that beyond doubt.
So I would say,
1. Getting concensus for healthcare this year will be a challenge.
2. Getting a pro-choice Supreme Court Justice approved will be a challenge.

After these two things are done then more controversial legislation will probably become priorities, like, some version of FOCA. It could very well go through Congress and reach Obama's desk next year, but if Boxer and Nadler introduce it before then, I doubt it will make it out of committee.

Tell me, how does one sign something that hasn't even come to his desk yet for him to sign? Congress seems to be over looked in many cases here.

The dictator is no longer in charge of the country. How about we start jumping on our Congress folks for a change instead of making claims of broken promises.
