MSNBC showing Obama and Biden at Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington, VA.
Just standing in line ... waiting their turn. Scanning the menu overhead, chatting it up, leaving a $5 tip in the counter tip jar.

I'm just watching and laughing. This really tickles me. Biden seems genuinely amused.

8. The couple in line in front of them seemed perplexed. I can just imagine.
After all, don't you let them go ahead? Do you just make them wait while you order? It could get confusing.

Even as egalitarian as I regard myself, I know I'd be perplexed, too. Nervous. OMG! He'll see what I order!

14. Yup. I thought that was funny.
POTUS has a sense of humor. It's the kind of thing I'd do ... since I find a lot of amusement in folks' reaction to things that are quite benign even if unusual "according to Emily Vanderbilt."

It's like making friendly conversation to strangers in a elevator ... as everyone stares at the numbers above the door. I enjoy facing backwards, making eye contact, smiling and saying "Good Morning!" The elevator ritual is perfect for having fun. Obama's entire life, 24x7 now, has to be rife with such opportunities. It's a good way to keep 'sane' ... or just exactly as 'insane' (nutty) as is needed to keep emotionally healthy.

During the primaries, he ate at a lot of diners and fast food joints, so that makes sense. As for his chest, just maybe it's sweat. He's usually photographed after he's been working out or playing basketball if you can see his chest.

Whatever.

Obama, Biden go out for burgers
BEN FELLER - 5/5/2009 4:57:25

It's like this: When you want a burger, you have to have a burger.

In this state of mind, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden took a short _ but wholly noticeable _ motorcade ride from the White House to Virginia and pulled into a small, independent burger joint called Ray's Hell Burger.

The two leaders went right up to the counter where the meat was being grilled and ordered.

Each fetched cash from his pocket and paid, and then the pair stood like the rest and waited for their number to be called before going to a table.

The restaurant, which prides itself on premium aged 10-ounce burgers, sits in a small strip plaza. The burgers sell for $6.95.

44. and how was he able to do this without shutting down the whole city?
What I learned in the last 8 years is that the president doesn't go anywhere without the streets being cleared of any ordinary people whose shadows might fall on his path, all surrounding buildings locked down and barricaded, and hand-picked supporters placed prominently in the front row. Oh, and a free-speech zone a couple of miles away. Durn that Obama for breaking with precedent.

I hope the Secret Service lets him continue to do this. In some ways, quick, unannounced random visits may be easier for security since fewer people are likely to be paying attention.

It's almost like 'The Truman Show' ... the only 'privacy' he gets is inside the White House Bubble ... and he's under constant surveillance even then.

I'm grinning at Biden ... 'cause he's OBVIOUSLY enjoying this unusual President. Obama is a real breath of fresh air.

23. I love how he's determined to get "out and about" ... quick, unannounced trips.
The Secret Service is probably VERY ambivalent about it ... they gotta love the amusement but probably get stressed about providing 'instant' site clearance. They had to surround the small strip mall with police tape ... and maintain a security perimeter. I'm pretty sure Obama does his best to cooperate with them -- a heads up in advance -- but is unwilling to sacrifice the outings. I gotta love that attitude.

25. The shot MSNBC missed...
MSNBC should have walked around to the back. To catch the homeless people hanging around. Hanging around the dumpster. Waiting to possibly scrape together a meal from what Obama and Biden didn't eat.

Just another planned photo-op. No doubt to counter last week's unplanned photo-op. Michelle Obama is not like the rest of us. But Obama and Biden are. They stop at little fast food places for a hamburger. Just like the rest of us. You know what? They're not like the rest of us. They're certainly not like the rest of us hanging around the dumpster.

At least Obama tries to interact with the unwashed masses and ventures into DC on occasion with Michelle. I have volunteered for the homeless before. Its a real problem. Heck ,I worked with abused, neglected and abandoned children for a few years. Its heartbreaking. However, there is no need to get mad at the President for wanting to get out and be among the people.

They didn't just suddenly decide to hop in the car and drive to Arlington and just hoped that MSNBC was tagging along.

It was staged. MSNBC was invited. It was a photo-op. Phony. Like them.

And I just love that "unwashed masses" comment. Thank god you're not volunteering any more. How ever did you manage to get through each day when you did. Having to be around the "unwashed masses."

around people like us and probably would use that term about everyday people. You are completely nuts. What are you even doing on a Dem board to begin with as you detest the Dem pres and VP so much? And as for volunteering, if you are so into it then don't you want as many people as you can get? Seriously nuts. I have worked with kids who were living on the street, who had been beaten nearly to death by their parents and who either ran away or were abandoned completely. I watched these kids try to kill themselves, watched them go through their depression-at 6,7,8 years old. They were living in a boy's home and as a 24 year old counselor it was terrible to see them go through a lot of emotional pain. Please do not act holier then thou.

They live to nurse anger at and resentment of Obama 24/7. It seems they'd have plenty of what you want to hear.

No one says you have to be a cheerleader, but you seem to take every opportunity to turn anything about Obama into a screed against him.

Yeah, yeah, you reserve the right to criticize when you think they're wrong, but how many times do you have to say the same thing?

I'd much rather see them out and about rather than hiding in the WH like the last Prez did.

And - Michelle and Jill both work regularly at food banks, so they are offering meals to people that need it.

74. I haven't touched any red meat since somewhere around 1999, myself.
(Although I do admit to occasionally craving an In-n-Out Burger.)

Still, given the level of ***OUTRAGE!!!!!!*** that brazen, unrepentant meat eating sometimes engenders around here, I'm just always wondering in these threads whether or not the Obamas are going to get a pass.

My friend took me to Ray's Hellburger not that long ago. Too bad I didn't know Obama was going to be there today. :(

59. Can you imagine being in your local burger joint for lunch and
having the POTUS and Veep stroll in? That must have been amazing. I wonder if that $5 bill is on ebay yet.

66. It's strange, I thought "Who pays cash anymore?" But then I realized the Pres. can't just give his
debit card to a cashier, it might be unwise. Then I wondered, "Does he go to an ATM or what?" These are important questions.
