Did anyone notice that Karl Rove started this last thing with Pelosi?
Edited on Fri May-15-09 06:44 PM by lunatica
I said this on another thread then thought I should post it myself. This is vintage quintessential Karl Rove tactics. He's the one who suddenly came out and attacked Nancy Pelosi in his article once he probably realized that the Republicans were losing the torture debate and, of course, he has to watch out for himself and his future. This is so like him. Attack the enemy where they are strongest. And right now they're strongest on the torture issue. So he makes sure that all the heat goes to Pelosi with one accusation that's probably groundless since his tactics are always about creating lies. So again he's controlling the message.

I hope Limbaugh is realizing he's just been undercut by Rove because the Republicans jumped on the attack on Pelosi like they'd just found their new leader. Rove sicced his attack dogs on Nancy and Rush won't like that.

Congress and Waterboarding Nancy Pelosi was an accomplice to 'torture.'
by Karl Rove

(snip)
If Mrs. Pelosi considers the enhanced interrogation techniques to be torture, didn't she have a responsibility to complain at the time, introduce legislation to end the practices, or attempt to deny funding for the CIA's use of them? If she knew what was going on and did nothing, does that make her an accessory to a crime of torture, as many Democrats are calling enhanced interrogation?

Senate Judiciary Chairman Pat Leahy wants an independent investigation of Bush administration officials. House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers feels the Justice Department should investigate and prosecute anyone who violated laws against committing torture. Are these and other similarly minded Democrats willing to have Mrs. Pelosi thrown into their stew of torture conspirators as an accomplice?

It is clear that after the 9/11 attacks Mrs. Pelosi was briefed on enhanced interrogation techniques and the valuable information they produced. She not only agreed with what was being done, she apparently pressed the CIA to do more.

6. Well, in all truth Pelosi had a lot of Democrats pissed off for years
This attack may be very unfair, or not, but she didn't exactly give much of a shit about listening to us once she had the gavel. We all wanted to trust her but she very quickly dashed any hopes of that. And many Democrats (us the citizens, not the elected ones) wondered why she went along with Bush so much. Many times we suspected she knew this stuff.

But that should not detract from getting at the truth, the whole truth and nothing but...

11. That Sentiment, Ma'am, is One Reason The Enemy Chose This Particular Line
One always aims for apparent fissures in an opposing coalition. The pre-existing animus held by some is no excuse for their falling into line at present with Rove's line of attack. The proper response is to stand by someone under attack by a common enemy, and groups who will not coalesce in this manner are doomed to defeat.

It is worth pointing out, too, that actual deep dislike of Speaker Pelosi is pretty rare among the rank and file of voting Democrats. It is a mistake to take disagreement with one policy or another at some particular time for the sort of detestation some have been demonstrating for years.

12. I agree with everything you say. I have not attacked Pelosi myself
Because I think the truth will come out either way, but I tend to believe Bob Graham when he points out that he was not briefed and that the CIA has given him erroneous dates when he asked them to show when he was supposedly briefed. It turns out his daily calendar shows no such briefings on three out of four dates, and that his staff were invited on the fourth date which is simply not done when the subject is top security as the briefings were supposed to be.

7. But it just exploded yesterday and today...

As soon as Karl told them what to say in his article. He took the attention off the Republicans' sorry ass defending of the torture by saying it isn't torture to suddenly calling it torture to attack Pelosi. The whole thing changed right before our disbelieving ears and eyes. Suddenly Rove is controlling the message which has changed from defending torture and insisting it wasn't torture to attacking Pelosi for being an accomplice to torture.

14. I missed that, but I'm not surprised.
This whole affair was an obvious GOP hit job from day one, and it's sad how many DUers are willing to let their distaste for Pelosi blind them to the fact that they're dancing to Rove's and the CIA's tune.
