AP may be "concerned"....since they yell in their headline that we are mad as hell
....guess we better live up to our billing that they so generously gave us!

Obama revives terror tribunals, dismaying liberals
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090515/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_guantanamo_trials

paragraph 13 of the article.....

As a senator, Obama voted for one version of the tribunal law that gave detainees additional rights, but then voted against the more limited 2006 legislation that ultimately became law.

Listing of changes to the current system according to below article, most which were in the law that Obama initially supported as mentioned above:

The military trials will remain frozen for four more months as the administration adjusts the legal system that is expected to try fewer than 20 of the 241 detainees currently at the U.S. naval detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Thirteen detainees — including five charged with helping orchestrate the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks — are already in the tribunal system.

Two senior administration officials outlined several of the rules changes, which are being carried out by executive authority, to The Associated Press on Thursday night. They include:

Restrictions on hearsay evidence that can be used in court against the detainees.
A ban on all evidence obtained through cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. This would include statements given from detainees who were subjected to waterboarding.
Giving detainees greater leeway in choosing their own military counsel.
Protecting detainees who refuse to testify from legal sanctions or other court prejudices.
White House may seek more changes
The White House may seek additional changes to the military commissions law over the next 120 days, but it was not immediately clear Thursday what they could include.

2. Obama Has Become Fond of Extra-Judicial Law Enforcement
Edited on Fri May-15-09 07:13 PM by MannyGoldstein
Continuation of extraordinary rendition, continuation of warrantless wiretapping, and now this.

What's so wrong with our Judiciary? They were set up as an independent branch for a very, very good reason.

3. Not dismaying me because
I read more on it than the title. The corporatemedia manipulates and manufactures and too many get sucked into stupidville.

5. Well, he can't put them in the regular judicial courts.. All a lawyer would have to do
is explain that the information that was exposed could not be used because the person was under extreme duress (torture). Due Process and all the legal laws would allow these people to walk away. Some of them are actually dangerous or should be locked up. However, a regular judicial system would have no other recourse than to let them free. AND at this point, how many of them are now dangerous because we've held them for years and tortured them?

Because of Gitmo and the torture, we are unable to allow these detainees to have a regular day in court. Because of Bush and Cheney, we are unable to allow detainees a normal day in court.

Obama knows this. There is no way to allow these detainees a normalized court. I hope once Gitmo closes a law is placed internal and internationally that would NEVER allow a Gitmo type system ever again. Actually, there may already be laws against a Gitmo style detention facility.

6. They can't use the regular civilian courts because of the
damage it would do to our government because of it's involvement with the orchestration of 9/11.
That is assuming of course that any of these so called terrorists actually had anything to do with or even knew anything about any involvement with 9/11 - Which is also in doubt.

Bu$h and company sure did a fine job of things with their web of lies... And so it continues.

7. all you need is a headline..
I've learned my lesson about our media..how to dissect an article to see what the facts are that they are creating their storyline from..and believing absolutely nothing on the tv screen. I'm learning my lesson about this place too. Again.

I wish folks would follow Obama's example, and wait till the fuck they know what they are talking about before saying anything.

9. it's not even knee-jerk..
it's eagerly waiting for a sentence to pounce on, so you can let loose with a string of expletives. And then call it 'dissent'.

10. Sad to see how many people here have become inured to extra legal "justice" these days
Having become so numb to Bushco's blatant skirting of the law, many are now willing to settle for tactics that are still unjust, but do seem to be somehow kinder and gentler.

Instead of having these matters taken care of in open court, it now seems to be acceptable to continue the tribunals so long as there are a few changes.

What's the excuse going to be when Obama continues to hold people in prison indefinitely?
