Obama nominates Max Cleland to head military monuments commission
@ 8:28 pm by Eric Zimmermann

President Obama has nominated former Sen. Max Cleland (D-Ga.) to be Secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission.

Cleland served one term in the Senate before losing a tough re-election campaign to Saxby Chamblis in 2002.

After Obama was elected, some thought the President would tap Cleland, who lost three limbs in the Vietnam War, to be Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

Established in 1923, the American Battle Monuments Commissions, as the name implies, is responsible for establishing and maintaining military memorials.

An interesting bit of trivia: Cleland will be the first secretary of the commission who isn't a military general.

5. Wow, at first I was thinking, Obama got something right
then I read "military MONUMENTS COMMISSION"? Couldn't Obama have gotten him a more important job? This is a figurehead job, nothing really that important. Isn't he more qualified for something more? How about something at the VA or VA hospital? At least something where he can make a difference.

6. If Cleland isn't complaining, why are you?
I'm glad he found something for Mr. Cleland.
