4. Ted Rall STILL can't draw a caricature of Bush!
That is the only thing I hate about Rall. Otherwise, he's no worse than the average editorial cartoonist. But his inability to draw Bush and make it LOOK like Bush has pissed me off for eight years.

When the HELL did Bush ever look like this?

When did he ever wear a uniform (usually shown as red in color)? When did he wear a hat? Would you even freaking KNOW it was Bush if the name wasn't on the uniform - and that didn't usually appear in his teeny, tiny renditions?

GAAAA! TED RALL, LEARN HOW TO FREAKING DRAW! GAAAA!

Okay, I'm calmer now. Thanks.

42. Not much worse than the BS rants about "Preventive Detention" I've seen here.
I read "prolonged detention" to mean "we've been handed a very complicated set of circumstances and I just don't have all the answers yet".

Editorials and articles changed the president's words to "preventive detention" and people here ran with it.

bullshit.

33. I've laughed out loud at Rall's cartoons for many many years: he really speaks to
my deep cynicism about the world. I think the column exhibits the depth of Rall's own cynicism. Even when volunteering for the Obama campaign, I expected to be dissatisfied with the centrism of his Presidency, and I did not expect that electing Obama would reduce the need for committed activist work for change. Rall, however, seems to react as if he expected all our political cares and troubles to vanish and is sudenly bitter to find that the problems still confront us

12. Ted Rall is a rhetorical Mark Chapman
He was disillusioned. I think that Obama always telegraphs his punches. Then, when his own side is outraged, he capitulates, therby retaining almost ALL of his political capital. It is our job to Ted Rall Obama. Then he does what he wanted to do all along. He is a student of history. He sawthe resistance that FDR encountered. He has a lot of work ahead. To lose his mojo would be horrific. We must stalwartly Ted Rall, respectfully of course. Obama's got this, like all the other times. Might take a week or longer. CHILL!

Edited on Fri May-29-09 06:37 PM by Bucky
(on edit: the subject line used to read "everybody's hero", but on examination of three Rall threads, it seems that there've alwasy be a lot of DUers saying, "This Rall guy may be on our side, but he doesn't think very clearly." Score one point for Democrats' tendency to put critical thinking ahead of tribal loyalty)

Ted Rall: Time for Democrats to Rally Around Dean

<snip for a few choice quotes>

Barring some unforeseeable misstep, Gov. Howard Dean will be the Democratic nominee. Patrick Buchanan thinks so.

      and

What if the other Democratic candidates came together at a joint press conference to announce that they were dropping out of the race to endorse Dean?

      and

If nothing else, cash-starved states would love it--the average primary costs taxpayers $7 million. More to the point, it would save Dean roughly $75 million--enough to close the money gap with Bush.

      and

Canceling the primaries would convey that Democrats are no longer a clumsy amalgamation of special interests. We're organized, it would say.

{link to article}

As I wrote then...

I have to wonder if he {Rall} really understands how the primary election process, or even the basic human nature of political a candidate, works. He likes Dean--that's great. But his solution to the challenges before Dean is for everyone competing with him to just shut up, keep their concerns about Dean to themselves, and get the hell out of the way. That's a pretty undemocratic request, which the article seems to be making seriously.

Of course very few states, if any, are able to just call off their presidential primaries. Hodling these elections are a matter of law. Most states don't have exclusively presidential primaries anyway. There are all sorts of nomination elections being held in March and April, of which the selection for presidential delegates is only a small part. Cancelling the primaries would save virtually no money at all.

Not only that, but in fact the primaries and caucuses are how the Democrats decide who their delegates are. Is Rall suggesting that these states don't even need to bother sending delegates to the 2004 Convention in Boston? Hell, think of all the money we could save if we just called off the dang convention and just agreed, somehow, to let Dean be the nominee without all that expensive rigamaroll of convention halls and hotel rooms and exhorbitant helium balloon drops?

OK, Rall's a Democrat. But is he a democrat (with a small d)? Yes, to hell with these stupid election things. Let's all march like we're organized and unified. None of this Madisonian hogwash about "amalgamation" and "diversity".

I agree with Rall when he says that we need to unite against Bush to advance the cause of democracy. I find it quite silly when he suggests that we must destroy democracy in order to save it.

43. Some perspective, please -- consider Rall's work as a whole
I disagree with much (though not all) of what he says in this particular column. As for his cartoons, some I don't get, some I disagree with, and some elicit no reaction from me at all (when he's just stating what I think is obvious).

BUT -- many of his cartoons are nothing short of brilliant.

During the eight-year horror, Rall frequently cut through the MSM's whitewashing and told the truth about Bushco. Many, many times he made me feel better because I knew that at least someone got it.

I don't agree with Rall all the time. I also don't agree with Obama all the time. Specific disputes don't obscure the overall picture, though. If there's a poll about job performance, put me down as "Approve" for both those guys.
