Sen. Burris' 'Extraordinarily slim' chances
by Mark Silva

Charlie Cook, the seasoned political analyst, counts six Senate races next year as "toss-ups,'' including two seats now held by Democrats.

Illinois and Connecticut hold the Democratic seats in question ...

The other four toss-up states in 2010 Senate races, by Cook's count: Ohio, Missouri, Kentucky and, New Hampshire.

1. It's my understanding Burris is not going to run
Madigan is running and she'll bury him in the primaries.

She's about as beatable in Illinois as Boxer and Feinstein are in California

2. Blagojevich floated Lisa Madigan's name for Senate

By Mike Dorning | Washington Bureau
June 2, 2009

WASHINGTON -- - Shortly before then- Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested on corruption charges, he floated the idea of appointing Illinois Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan to the U.S. Senate in return for legislative help from her father, the powerful state House Speaker Michael Madigan, said a spokesman for U.S. Sen. 3. Madigan is running for governor
Burris will run and probably win in a split primary.

7. You willing to put money on that?
That is so incredibly improbable, I'd be willing to wager my can of "Clinton Cola" from 1996 on it.

Burris stands a snowball's chance in hell of becoming an elected senator.

10. What is improbable? Madigan running for governor or Burris winning the primary?
The reason the income tax went down to defeat Sunday was that father Madigan wants to make sure the state is doing poorly so daughter Madigan can save the day running against Quinn. If she was running for the Senate the tax would have passed. I'm not betting Burris can win the November election just the primary.

11. I'd take that primary bet too.
Burris wouldn't survive a primary against anyone.

15. Agree
at least I hope he won't. He's pathetic (and that's the kindest description I can think of).

16. You'd still be wrong.
Burris couldn't win a primary against anybody. Are you being serious?

Both Schakowski and Gianoullias would stomp him.

4. Dodd will lose CT unless he comes to his senses and decides not to run again.
Dodd has too much baggage

6. I hope you are wrong
I like and trust Dodd more than most and IMHO the "baggage" is mostly BS.

9. They don't like him here in Connecticut, same with Joe LiebeRat. I hope Ned LaMont
or Richard Blumenthal run; either of them would win the State

12. I will not be voting for Dodd again.
I also hope he comes to his senses and does not run. I will not vote for the repuke, but I won't be voting for Dodd. I think he will lose if he runs. He dug his own grave.

13. What did he dot that is so terrible?
Edited on Tue Jun-02-09 03:21 PM by Inuca
Beyond the various RW smears, that is. I am asking seriously, I did not follow closely. I know about the Countrywide thing and the flip-flop about the provision in the bill, that's about it. Neither of those are a big deal in my view, not when comapared with other things he has done, stood for, fought for.

17. Those are big things
because it's about power and corruption, which is usually what happens to a career politician. Washington cannot change unless the people running it change. I am against career politicians. It's time for Dodd to step down.

18. I don't think they are big things
and I do not think Dodd is corrupt. He is definitely been in Washington for a long time and got used to the power of his position, maybe he considers it his due, but I think he uses is mostly for good. The Countrywide thing seemed to me, at worst, a sin of not paying enough attention, carelesness, that kind of thing. As for the amendment thing, I must confess I do not remember the exact details,l but it seemed to me as mostly a lack of communication with the WH, again imperfection, like everybody, but nothing evil.

As for career politicians, I am actually for it. Once in a very long while you can have an Obama that comes more or less out of nowhere and shakes things up. But even in his case, remember that he was not exactly a trailblazer as a senator. I think that in most cases being a politician is a profession, and you get better at it with practice. Assuming of course good will, intelligence, and a desire to learn. So no, I do not have ANY problem with the various congressmen and senators that have been there for a long time, as long as they are doing a good job. Kennedy would be the extreme example, but there are others as well.

5. Then he's a moron. Burris doesn't have a quarter of a chance in the primaries.
Madigan or someone else will win, and win the seat in a walk.

14. I was polled about this a while back
a month or two ago (I live in IL, obviously). I was asked about my preferences among Burris, Madigan, a guy whose name I cannot remember (italian name I think, not sure), and maybe one more name that meant nothing to me. I chose the eauivalent of none of the above. Had Schakowsky's name been on the list, I would have chosen her gladly.
