Obama Says U.S. Could Be Seen as a Muslim Country, Too

By Jeff Zeleny

HAHN, Germany — As President Obama prepared to leave Washington to fly to the Middle East, he conducted several television and radio interviews at the White House to frame the goals for a five-day trip, including the highly-anticipated speech Thursday at Cairo University in Egypt.

In an interview with Laura Haim on Canal Plus, a French television station, Mr. Obama noted that the United States also could be considered as “one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.” He sought to downplay the expectations of the speech, but he said he hoped the address would raise awareness about Muslims.

“Now, I think it’s very important to understand that one speech is not going to solve all the problems in the Middle East,” Mr. Obama said. ” And so I think expectations should be somewhat modest.”

He previewed several themes and objectives for the speech, which aides said the president intended to tinker with — and rewrite — aboard Air Force One during his 12-hour flight to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“What I want to do is to create a better dialogue so that the Muslim world understands more effectively how the United States, but also how the West thinks about many of these difficult issues like terrorism, like democracy, to discuss the framework for what’s happened in Iraq and Afghanistan and our outreach to Iran, and also how we view the prospects for peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians,” Mr. Obama said.

The president said the United States and other parts of the Western world “have to educate ourselves more effectively on Islam.”

7. I don't think it was a smart thing to say
I deal with Muslim people every day on the phone, they call into where I work, and are pleased that I can accurately pronounce their names. But I used to live in Western Washington, and there are very large parts of this country where the vast majority of US citizens never ever encounter a person of the Muslim faith.

This is going to shock them, and I don't think that's a great idea.

21. Sorry for not making it clear
I meant the reaction of the people who do not know Muslims, not of the Muslim people themselves. I would imagine that American Muslims would be fine with a characterization of the United States as a Muslim nation, but that people who consider themselves a million miles away from Islam might be somewhat taken aback at this description.

9. If it was accurate, this would not be a problem, but, even using the highest numbers from CAIR,
the Muslim population is about 7 million people (only slightly bigger than France with more than 5 Million Muslims or England), and therefore does not make a lot of sense (not to speak of other numbers that are a lot lower around 2 millions).

So how can a comment like that be useful? His trip, though, will be, I am sure.

10. Given those numbers, it does make sense.
Still, why would anyone assume this is going to be anything but helpful?

15. Because it is not true..
Edited on Tue Jun-02-09 08:44 PM by Mass
Being the 20th or lower Muslim country does not make you one of the greatest Muslim countries, I do not think it will hurt a lot, but it goes too far in the other direction. Saying that Islam is the second or 3rd religious group in the country (depending on whether you count Christians like a whole or not), is a correct statement which shows that Islam is an important religion.

It is nitpicking, I know. but somehow, it bothers me. If Obama thought so, why did he not say that to Brian Williams? It seems like pandering to me.

13. That would be more Muslims than live in Libya, and more than in Lebanon and Palestine combined.
Why isn't the comment useful? What's wrong with saying to Muslim world that America has many Muslims in it?

14.  So, how many countries do you think have a larger Muslim population than the US?
My guess is that it is at least 40 or 50.

Here are 16 Muslims country with at least 3 to 4 times the US population.

http://islam.about.com/od/muslimcountries/a/population.htm

Now, had he said that the US were the 3nd religion in the country after Catholics and Southern Baptist. It would have been an accurate fact. But, while not important, the notion that the US is one of the greatest Muslim country seems ludicrous.

16. It's clear that he wasn't comparing the U.S. to the largest Muslim countries
Saying the U.S. could be considered one of the largest Muslim countries when there are predominantly Muslim countries with smaller populations is not ludicrous or inaccurate.

18. Sorry, I disagree. There are many countries with larger Muslim populations than
the US (and I am counting in absolute numbers here, not in %). It does not really matter, but it seems pandering to me.

17. Saying "one of the largest Muslim countries in the world" is a bit much,
as it's only true if you take that sentence to mean, "one of the largest countries in the world that has a significant number of Muslims living in it," which is obviously not a natural reading of the sentence.

On the other hand, I do think the claim that the US could be considered a Muslim country (which is not the claim he seems to have made) is a worthwhile claim.

23. Even the total number needs to be calculated as percentatge of total population
Edited on Wed Jun-03-09 11:51 AM by Mike Daniels
France may have less total Muslims than the US but I imagine their percentage of the total population of France overshadows the equivalent figure for the US.

Probably not one of Obama's better worded statetments as it lends itself to multiple interpretations.

19. Honestly, what do the Freepers expect?
Do they expect him to not acknowledge the 7 million Muslims that live here and pray here?

Maybe Obama was referring to land mass instead of population.

Freepers should be more worried about whether their bar closes because of factory layoffs instead of a mideast speech.

20. (shrug) America has just over the median number of Muslims, of countries....
with a significant number of Muslims in the first place. (I.e., well over the median, if all countries flat-out are considered.)

America ranks #35th in total Muslim population.

Some countries that have fewer Muslims than America include:

Libya
Jordan
Turkmenistan
UAE
Kyrgyzstan
Kuwait
Lebanon
Bahrain

Not sure what the big to-do is.

26. What makes you think I didn't?
I know what he was saying and why and still think it was a dumb thing to say. We are supposed to be a SECULAR country and pandering to ANY religion is objectionable to me. Not to mention that this now becomes a story instead of his speech tomorrow in Cairo.

27. Well, that's an "iffy" way to paraphrase what he said. The quote is...
What he said in that interview, according to that transcript, is:

"Now, the flip side is I think that the United States and the West generally, we have to educate ourselves more effectively on Islam. And one of the points I want to make is, is that if you actually took the number of Muslims Americans, we'd be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world. And so there's got to be a better dialogue and a better understanding between the two peoples."

He could've worded that a bit better. But, he didn't in any way say that America could be viewed as a Muslim nation. That's a stretch, even for a paraphrase.

Not a friendly news source, I suspect.

As Chicago had more Polish residents than any city in Poland except for Warsaw.
