1. If by better, do you mean will a Latina realize that much of our
traditional law is slanted to protect the rich and powerful at the expense of the poor and weak, the HELL YEAH!

...how could anyone even argue to the contrary?

4. What a horrible push poll! Try setting the context!
Edited on Wed Jun-03-09 07:11 PM by Buzz Clik
"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life," she was specifically discussing the importance of judicial diversity in determining race and sex discrimination cases.

Holy shit. I hope to God you didn't do this on purpose, but the result is the same regardless.

10. I get so pissed everytime the quote is read on the news
Edited on Wed Jun-03-09 07:17 PM by DrToast
They NEVER put it in context.

It was about discrimination cases, people! Context matters!

Then there's the meme that, "If a white guy said that he'd be done for." If a white guy said that, it wouldn't make sense!!!

I trust you understand that there are many among us who are more than willing to stir the pot with known fabrications.

5. First, her name is spelled "Sotomayor". Second -

when considering whether a minority female has a perspective on life a white male does not (and never could) have and if that perspective will allow her to make better decisions for the good of ALL Americans, not just white men - yes.

I am excited to have someone who can bring a broader view to the court. I am sick to death of being ruled by white men.

6. Her life experiences will give her a different way to look at making
decisions, for better or worse. It's all good imo, and much ado about nothing.

And she was speaking her truth.

8. I have high hopes that this particular "Latina" will.
I reject the notion that any person would inherently make better or worse decisions based on race or gender.

9. The "white males" would make poorer decisions on certain cases
being that they lack her particular life experiences.

11. Probably. But this poll is a little dishonest.
Unless, of course, the two questions are unrelated to each other.

13. Your headline is misleading
She said being a wise Latina would be an advantage over the white male in race and gender discrimination cases.

17. Maybe yes maybe no.
Her experiences could lead her to a different conclusion than a white male, whether that conclusion would be better or worst than that of a white male it could go either way.

23. Other - Her words were out of context and twisted by
media.

I believe her to be a good choice for the SCOTUS and her specific life experiences and innate intelligence give her the required wisdom.

She will make better decisions than most white males; specifically most of those currently on the court.

As a class, there are white males that are equally qualified but I also think the diversity she brings -- female and Latina -- is good in that inclusiveness is an important signal in what I would like of our society.
