Official Cairo Speech Thread #1
For heaven's sake somebody help me.

Obama greeted with cheers. Speaks in foreign language. More cheers.

Great tension with Muslim states and tension around the world.

Chime in somebody.

1. Extremists and view of US
towards Islamists because of violence. Relationship can't be defined by differences. Cycle of suspicion and discord must end. New beginning between the United States an Muslims, mutual interest and mutual respect.

2. Progress, tolerance, dignity of all human beings
are shared values. No single speech can irradicate years of mistrust.

To move forward, we must say openly what is sometimes only said behind close doors. Must respect, etc.,

Qotes Quran. Be conscious of God and speak always the truth. Applause.

It was beyond him in all respects.

Talent speaks. In the case of Obama it speaks to the entire world. Sometimes in order to change History it's essential to change the landscape in which change occurs.

Language is an extremely effective tool in that kind of landscaping.

24. This is - and will be - a speech of historic significance. Obama is brilliant in this.
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 06:02 AM by sohndrsmith
Be angry at Obama for what you will - but this speech and the thoughts of our president in shaping moments like this with the significance they deserve, and the intellectual, empathetic grace and understanding that few (if any) can match - really can't be dismissed in it's own right.

This speech (this Presidents' words and message) are more than outstanding. Imagine what this country would look like or how untenable it's hope might be - had we not been fortunate enough to have this President at THIS time in history. I don't think there is any issue or difficulty that would have fared better through the leadership of anyone else.

I love the fact that President Obama can leave me awestruck when I've assumed time and again that the dew is off the vine (or whatever the phrase is). We are seeing history in proportions - the significance of which I don't think we are fully aware of since it's neither history nor projected dream - but years from now it'll hit us. I all but guarantee it - even for those who are really mad at Obama right now - and for good reason in some matters. The big picture - and time - I believe, will prove this man, President, thinker - more than the specific issues of disagreement or failure. The meaning of his influence overall throughout his years of leadership. I think, will stand far and above many (even most) before him.

Just THINK about what is happening right now.... this is mindbogglingly historic. This is history as valuable as that of past centuries we read in history books - and we're LIVE participants... it's just incredible....

58. While this speech may not "change" or "solve" large problems and conflicts
within the Middle East or between the Middle East and the Western world, one of the more effective objectives (I think) that was woven within this historic speech - is that it _ challenges _ the leaders of the Muslim world, communities and countries to be the "better man" the "better person"... something which I think is profoundly meaningful to the cultures he was addressing, and I think that is why he used some wording and phrases that he doesn't normally use (rather than "dumbing" the words down for easy translation or other logistic purposes - but I could be wrong on that, certainly). Honor and pride of the heads of state and household has a different significance in the Muslim community (I think) and has basic differences he had to speak to - without disrespecting his own or our Western philosophies.

I lose at a coin toss (and I'm Native American - in part - and will never do anything but walk through a casino, if anything) but I would bet with conviction that this President is going to earn himself a place among the topmost leaders/Presidents we've had - the number of which can be counted on one - or one and a half hands... we're seeing this live, folks. No president has been infallible on every issue, and none ever will be. But as mad as one might be at Obama for this or that issue - I hope there is room to see the big picture - what is stunning about this President and our being alive to be part of it, not just read about it...
