AP report: Source claims Obama intel pick tied to CIA torture program
A former Bush administration official nominated by President Barack Obama to serve at DHS was linked to the CIA’s torture program, a source tells the Associated Press.

An AP article claims that a congressional aide “who spoke on condition of anonymity,” and wasn’t “authorized to discuss the matter publicly,” has “confirmed that Mudd, who was deputy director of the Office of Terrorism Analysis at the CIA during the Bush administration, had direct knowledge of the agency’s harsh interrogation program.”

The AP notes it could wind up becoming “an issue during Philip Mudd’s confirmation hearing, which is expected next week. Mudd was nominated to be under secretary of intelligence and analysis at Homeland Security.”

An updated AP story reveals that “Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said her staff is looking into the extent of Mudd’s involvement in these interrogation program.”

“Mudd’s analysts used information obtained through harsh interrogations, and the official said that Mudd is likely to be questioned on whether the analysis branch pressured interrogators in the field to use harsher methods because they believed detainees were not telling the truth,” the AP adds.

1. rawstory.
Whatever happened with their breaking news that Liberty U. would be losing their tax-free status?

Sorry, they could be right, but they seem to just want to grab headlines. I'm not convinced of their integrity at all.

11. The NYT that gave Judith Miller frontpage status and wouldn't give Landay and Strobel ink
for their reports about CIA analysts pointing finger at Bush-Cheney for cooking the Iraq intel books.

"Once allegedly ordered FBI agents to search falafel sales records to find Iranian terrorists."

Must have been surprised when all they found was Bill O'Reilly with his loofa!

Aside from the torture problems, it sounds like this guy can't find his ass with both hands, mapquest and a flashlight.

23. To be fair,
I've ended up in the wrong place (or having to make impossible turns onto one-ways, or having the map tell me to drive through a building) enough times with mapquest that I can understand his difficulties.

10. Clearly, since you don't seem to understand the first thing about journalism
If it wasn't for anonymous sourcing, we'd have never heard of half the shit that Bush, Reagan and Nixon got caught doing.

18. He was also local here, working with FBI spying on Muslims' GROCERY PURCHASES.
Obama Nominee Linked to Spying on Muslims, CIA Torture

The Obama administration’s pick for a top Homeland Security position has ties to the FBI spying on Muslim Americans, as well as reported links to CIA torture. Philip Mudd has been nominated to become secretary of intelligence and analysis at Homeland Security. Under the Bush administration, Mudd helped spearhead an FBI program that sifted through customer data collected by San Francisco-area grocery stores in 2005 and 2006, hoping that sales records of Middle Eastern food would lead to Iranian secret agents. A congressional aide, meanwhile, told the Associated Press Mudd had direct knowledge of the torture of foreign prisoners while serving as deputy director of the CIA’s Office of Terrorism Analysis. Mudd’s confirmation hearing is expected next week.

It's good to know that the end of the Cold War didn't mean the end of hilariously batshit "intelligence" programs.

25. Wow, so Susan Collins is done wanting to investigate diploma mills and the postal service
Edited on Fri Jun-05-09 02:21 PM by Proud Liberal Dem
NOW, she wants to get into some SERIOUS investigations? Nice to see her flaunting her "independence" NOW! Oh, and I thought that Buscho DIDN'T torture and that "harsh interrogations" were supposed to be o.k. (but Pelosi knowing about it is bad)? Is anybody else's head spinning right about now?

Well, since we now have a Republican demanding investigation into Obama possibly nominating somebody with ties to BUSHCO'S "CIA torture program", can we NOW get FULL investigations into EIT, detainee abuse, etc.???????

Or do the Republicans just get to investigate DEMOCRATS and DEMOCRATIC nominees for having "something" to do with the CRIMINAL actions of the prior REPUBLICAN (mis-)administration?
