Monthly job loss (2009)
January - 741,000

February - 681,000

March - 652,000

April - 504,000

May - 345,000

Now, it is possible that there are no more jobs to lose but otherwise, it appears that since Obama took office, that the number of job lost each month is getting smaller and smaller.

Or does this fall into the "how to lie with statistics?"

I think that these are encouraging data, but the RWers scream about continuing job loss..

1. It's encouraging...

Anyone that says otherwise is full of it.

Every recession ends with a deceleration in the rate of job loss.

You don't go from hugely negative job losses in one month to positive job growth the next.

2. Thanks, Perhaps this is the reason why more and more economists -
who are not RWers - now claim to see the end of the recession.

3. I think we're ahead of the projections they were making in December
At that point they were saying that job losses might start decreasing by the end of the year, but now we've been seeing that happen for a few months.

4. Yes but if you do the math........
Edited on Tue Jun-09-09 09:13 PM by Clio the Leo
... if you multiply by six and carry the 8 and round to the highest square root of pie ......... yum ..... I mean pi ....... well, Obama's screwing us all over!

I know this, because I read it in Joe Scarborough's book.

And HE got the idea from DU. ;)

*I* have been noticing that the RATE of increase has been going down for months now (which is not to be confused with the number of new claims, that's what confuses everyone and that's the figure the press likes to wave around) ..... it's always nice to have company.

5. a bit misleading
Like you said, there are less jobs to be lost each month in this situation.

7. Until they do something about
bringing the jobs back they sent overseas, they're just whistling past the graveyard.

8. The May number is low because UE benefits are ending & not because people are finding jobs
The US census counts job losses in America 6 different ways but only initially reports the third way to the media called the U3 unemployment rate.

The U3 unemployment rate answers the question "are you on UE benefits" while the U6 unemployment rate ask "do you have a job, do you want a job" and that rate is 16.4% which is a VERY sharp increase from last months rate and 3.5% away from Great Depression numbers.

That's why the stock markets 200 point rally ended flat on the day the UE numbers were announced because the U6 rate was announced shortly afterward and it was horrible.

The only saving grace this country has now in regards to jobs is Obama stimulus plan which will kick in most jobs next year.

11. It still doesn't say that the overall numbers are going down!
Edited on Wed Jun-10-09 06:39 PM by cascadiance
These are still huge losses each month, whether or not they are shrinking. And the number of overall people that are jobless (including myself) that these add on to each month is STILL growing!! What matters is if those people get hired so that the overall unemployment rate goes down (and not just from attrition for the reasons cited elsewhere in this thread).

12. Yippee!
345,000 jobs gone, highest in 15+ years. "Encouraging," is insensitive spin. Very much missing the reality of those lives behind the numbers.
