We are going to get "co-ops" instead of a public health insurance option.
'"I'm doing all I can to get a bipartisan solution, and right now the so-called public option is being transformed into a private alternative," Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Montana, said as he left a closed-door meeting on the issue. "It may not work. If so, we'll have to find something else. But right now it looks like it has a decent chance of working."'

"The nonprofit co-ops, based on the model of electricity, agricultural and other cooperatives in rural states, would be run and paid for by its members, although an initial infusion of federal funds might be needed to get them off the ground, senators said."

This is "change" I cannot believe in.

2. It's a bullshit bitter plan that would take whatever money you have leftover
at the end of the month & give it to some managed health care corporation.

4. Is there a country that does it that way
as an example of how great it works and how happy the people are with it? If not, screw it. There are lots of countries that are good examples. Just take the one or two that the population is the most happy with and copy the damn thing.

6. and Baucus didn't campaign on change. I doubt anyone in Congress did.
This nonsense about "this isn't change" or "this isn't change I can believe in" that is all the rage on DU is so damn lame now because it should only apply to one person. When Obama starts saying he doesn't want a public option anymore then fire away with the change form responses, until then shove it you know where for safe keeping.

7. If it was one national co-op, it might work
But they're talking about each state having a co-op, which is ridiculous.

15. Baucus has made himself into a poison pill. It's obvious that he's not working in our nation's best
interests.

17. If the pukes support them then they aren't co-ops like you are thinking
of. They are just bad options no one could use that would maintain the status quo.

24. It Boils Down to Risk Pools
The smaller the pool, the more unfair the system is. I worked at an office where some of the employees were older people (+55). We looked into healthcare costs and found that, because of the age of some of the employees, we would all pay a fortune in premiums. Fortunately, we lived close to Mexico, so we traveled there for our dental care - sure as hell couldn't afford $1000 for a root canal and $400 for a crown (vs. $175 and $75 (porcelain), respectively). That was 10+ years ago and my Mexican root canal and crowns are still going strong.

Unless the co-ops were huge, the costs would vary widely. The best co-op would be a nationwide co-op - I'll support that! It's called "Medicare For All."

14. Fuck you, Baucus. We need to contact every
Senator, Congressperson who is against a public option, and demand that they surrender their own public health care coverage. If it's not good enough for us, then it's not good enough for them either! Who the fuck do these assholes think they are?

20. Why do people continue to trifle with this private/public bullshit third-way approach
Single payer now. The capitalistic model has NO BENEFIT to the insurance industry for primary care, period. This is what happens when you try and make a reform that makes everyone under the sun happy.

22. I hear that President Obama is going to be in Green Bay, Wis
today to have a town hall meeting about health. I think he will be getting an ear full. The last town hall meeting I saw him at, where the subject was anything they wanted to ask about, the first question out of the chute was health and single payer. I would like to see it, if it is on anywhere.
