GOP Leader Eric Cantor Predicts Republican Landslide in 2010
In ABC News Exclusive, Top GOP Leader Predicts Republicans Will Take Back House of Representatives in 2010

by JONATHAN KARL, RICK KLEIN and Z. BYRON WOLF
June 10, 2009

These may be dark days for the Republican Party, but a top GOP congressional leader predicted today that Republicans would trounce Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections and could take back control of the House of Representatives.

"I really believe we've got a shot at taking back this House because you see what's gone on here with the unfettered ability of this administration and Nancy Pelosi to run this Congress," Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., the No. 2 Republican in the House, told ABC News in an exclusive interview. "The American people see that this agenda is way far out of the mainstream. They want a check and a balance on this power. And I think at the end of the day that's what rules come November 2010."

Democrats currently have a 257-178 majority, meaning Republicans would need a net gain of 40 seats win control of the House. That would be a historic landslide similar to the 54-seat gain in 1994 that gave Republicans control of the House.

Despite Cantor's optimism, Republicans are in a deep hole. There's a popular Democrat in the White House, and according to the latest ABC News poll, only 21 percent of voters identify themselves as Republicans -- a 26-year low. In the same poll, Republicans in Congress had an approval rating of 30 percent, compared with 45 percent for congressional Democrats.

But Cantor says there is a growing public backlash against Democrats because of massive deficit spending and the administration's approach to national security, especially the decision to close the Guantanamo Bay prison.

"I do believe they are setting up an environment for us to make a very convincing case that this country needs a check and balance on this unbridled power," Cantor said.

In poll after poll, President Obama's approval rating has been greater than 60 percent, twice as high as Republicans in Congress, but Cantor insists the president and his party are vulnerable on the issues.

"Look, he's a likable guy. He's an attractive leader," Cantor said. "But his policies are now tanking. The economy is our issue again. National security is our issue again."

No dumbass, healthcare is our issue.

2. They will gain some seats as usually is expected in midterm but I doubt they will regain
control unless the economy still sucks as much as it does today.

43. I agree, Republicans have not figured out that the "Great American Middle," is what controls power
Edited on Fri Jun-12-09 06:33 AM by mikekohr
at the national level. Right now the Democratic Party occupies the left, the middle and the right-of-center in this country. Republicans occupy the conservative wing(nut) of the political spectrum, which is about 33% to 38% of the electorate. Democrats occupy about 54% to 56% of the electorate.

The numbers do not add up for Republicans given that on the National level, they continue to view the world with their heads stuck up their own asses. Sad thing is, they have been viewing the world from this perspective for so long they have learned to enjoy the view.

My neighbor, who was 16 or so, would come home from her friend's house every night, walk up to her bedroom, turn on that song and undress.

I was a perverted little boy and I'd watch. :P

But their majority could definitely shrink unless our party shows that there is a solid difference from the Republicans.

31. How did the GOP lose their majority?
By thinking they could maintain the status quo over the objections of the voters.

How did the Democrats win the majority?

By saying they would overturn the status quo and do whats right for the voters.

How will the Democrats lose their majority?

By saying they would overturn the status quo to voters, but continued supporting the status quo instead.

The voters spoke loud and clear in the last two elections, but does our party understand what they were saying to them?

35. It required more than that.
And they also had a really unpopular president.

I agree, if the Democrats don't get things done, it will hurt down the line. But it won't be enough to turn around the house.

This has been a meme for the past few days -- if they say it enough then it must be true? REALLY? Is this the GOP strategy?

In the mean time, I am seeing signs of the exact opposite... Once again, GOP Projection-ism <--it's like Racialism, only I made it up.

Someone show me one poll that says his policies are tanking.

34. WTF is he smoking???
I remember what things were like back in 1993-1994 and so far I'm not seeing a repeat other than in their delusional minds. Clinton surely didn't have a 63% approval rating back then, the Democrats have barely been back in power and two of those years we weren't able to really do much of anything legislatively because Buscho was still squatting in the WH and using his veto pen on everything. Also, despite all the fevered rantings, "teabagging", and accusations of creeping "socialism", *phony* birth certificates, excessive government spending, "racist" SCOTUS nominees, and other wild-eyed claims, Obama seems to not only be unaffected by it all but has actually become more popular as he has been unveiling his positive agenda. Also, people seem to understand that many of our current problems are not his fault nor that of the Democrats. 2010=GOP "landslide". Not going to happen IMHO.

Cantor's an idiot spouting party-line shit to maintain that magnificently crafted delusion that he and the rest of the GOP live in.

44. The GOP might take a few governorships, but I doubt they will make ANY
gains in Congress, certainly not many gains nationally for the next several elections - they have NO policies, NO real solid candidates, NO leadership in the party, NO direction except to say NO to Democrats.

Oh yeah, and - the stock market is stable in the mid 8000's, the recession appears to be easiing off, unemployment is bottoming out, the consumer confidence index is positive for the last several months, wholesale inventories are lower than anticipated, the banks are about tostart repaying the TARP money, home sales are up, and the stimulus bill is just showing signs of beginning to work.

The economy belongs to US,Eric - but you are right about being in a hole, and you have a lot of hate filled murderers on your side, too.
Have a great 2010, Eric....
