Yesterday as Wright's words were being reported, the Holocaust Museum shooter was reported to have harbored conspiracy theories about Jews as well.

Do I think Wright is the same type of guy as Von Brunn? No.

However, if Wright is indeed against bigotry against any group, including Jewish people, shouldn't it upset him that his words seem to blame people on the basis of their heritage/religion the same day similar words were the basis for Von Brunn to go on his rampage?

Has Wright disassociated himself from his own words and those that might think they have common cause with him?

1. I believe he has corrected his remarks.
He meant to say zionists.

10. does that let him off the hook?
Edited on Thu Jun-11-09 04:36 PM by CreekDog
i don't think so.

that would be like me blaming some ethnic group for robbing my house and then later saying, "no, i'm not a bigot, i meant to say 'thugs' not (name of group)"

it doesn't wash with me that he's not a bigot.

2. Who cares? Wright is only brought up to embarrass the President.
Why should the former-Rev. for the Pres get so much publicity?

9. and if he uses the terms interchangably, it argues that he is bigoted
rather than arguing against it.

11. So is it ok then to call Rahm and Axelrod zionists?
They are on the public's payroll. I don't think this fixes anything for Wright.

I am not being argumentative - I just don't know.

13. I haven't a clue as to where Axelrod stands on Israel, but Emanuel
is clearly a zionist, and it's likely Axelrod is too. So is Obama and a couple of hundred million other Americans. A zionist is simply someone who supports the existence of Israel. And zionists run the gamut from neo-con fascist types to Rabbi Lerner.

22. I can't believe anyone on DU is making a big deal about anything that Rev. Wright says
He is a private citizen, not a public figure. He has no connection to the President, who disavowed and distanced himself from him more than a year ago. He has not shot anyone.

Yet, for some reason, people here and elsewhere are trying to ramp up his comment into something important, a comment that was clearly made on the fly during a quick interview, not in any formal setting designed to influence the public discourse.

In other words, Rev. Wright's opinion is pretty meaningless, yet he is now being equated with a hate-filled murderer.

How convenient . . .

23. It is not being equated by me...
So peddle your stuff to others if you think they are.

However, bigotry is still bigotry. Big or little. Soft of hard. On the fly or in a planned sermon.

18. It is okay to call them Zionists
But it is a matter of context. Especially when "them Joos" is often replaced by some people with the term "Zionists" in order to mask antisemitism.

5. Hey, don't you know?
The Jews have been the designated scapegoat for centuries. The plague killed millions? Blame the Jews. Germany lost WWI? Blame the Jews. Obama doesn't want to talk to his former preacher? Blame the Jews. Obama became president? Blame the Jews.

12. Wright said, "Them Jews" probably referring to Rahm and Axelrod
Some here think that means that he isnt anti-semite, he just was talking about specific people (instead of just saying Rahm and Axelrod like normal people)

I still think he's a bigot based on this, his association with Farrakhan, and other things, but I thought I should just let you know what he actually said.

14. the networks didn't carry his remarks until AFTER the shooting...
.... what he said is a non-story when he said it, and it should be a non story now.

He's a perfect example of someone who is usually on point .... but doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut.

The President has moved on from him, we should to.

17. No it's not but Wright made a bigoted statement that got reported
and like it or not, that's news.

I cut Wright a lot of slack until I read that he blamed "Jews" for not being able to talk to Obama.

20. Them Zionists ain't going to let him talk to me,..
“He’s gotta do what politicians do,” Wright said. “Ethnic cleansing is going on in Gaza, “Ethnic cleansing the Zionist is a sin and a crime against humanity, and they don't want Barack talking like that because that's anti-Israel.”

Rev. Wright also said that “the Jewish vote, the A-I-P-A-C vote, that’s controlling him, that would not let him send representation to the Darfur Review Conference, that’s talking this craziness on this trip, cause they’re Zionists, they would not let him talk to someone who calls a spade what it is. “

I wonder if Rev Wright thinks Zionists have rhythm?

"Africans have a different meter, and Africans have a different tonality," he said. Europeans have seven tones, Africans have five. White people clap differently than black people. "Africans and African-Americans are right-brained, subject-oriented in their learning style," he said. "They have a different way of learning." And so on.
