To the youth in Iran..."They should know that the world is watching"...

EDIT: AP report below, complete with lame headline.

(06-15) 15:23 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

President Barack Obama says its up to Iran to determine its own leaders.

But he also says he's troubled by situation in Iran and that it would be wrong to stay silent. Obama says any investigation into Iranian election results must not result in bloodshed.

It was the U.S. president's his first comments following the disputed outcome of Iran's presidential election in which President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad retained his post. The results set off allegations of ballot fraud as well as a wave of violence and arrests in Iran.

Obama's remarks came at the end of an Oval Office meeting Monday with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.

3. I heard he was to make comments during his visit with Berlusconi at the WH.

This is a very precarious moment. He can't appear that he wants to to see an overthrow the current government of Iran right now, but he must also make it clear that America wants open elections and more democracy.

Tiny line to walk.

5. I don't think he will come out FOR or Against the protests.
And I really hope I am right. I don't want Obama to be FOR overthrowing the government of Iran.(we had another administration that did that, and look at the results...)

I want him to be for a more open government -- And yes, the world IS watching. Sounds like he is taking a very hands off approach, as it should be, right now.

6. His comment:
(thank you Clio!)

"I am deeply troubled by the violence I have been seeing on television. I think the democratic process, free speech, the ability of people to peacefully dissent -- all those are universal values and need to be respected. And whenever I see violence perpetrated on people who are peacefully dissenting, and whenever the American people see that, I think they are troubled."

"There appears to be a sense of people who were so hopeful and so engaged and so committed to democracy, who now feel betrayed, and I think it's important that moving forward, whatever investigations that take place are done in a way that does not result in bloodshed, and does not result in people being stifled, in expressing their views."

7. And there is this:
"I would say to them that the world is watching and inspired by their participation, regardless of what the ultimate outcome of the election was. And they should know that the world is watching." (6:47 p.m.)

Same link.

I am surprised that this has gotten so little attention. Especially when the GOP is now slamming him:
