17. Well, there's one thing NO ONE can argue when it comes to this admin....
..... they know how to handle PR.

A press event to cover something that only effects the Oval Office .... love it .... there is ONE place where he is lord and master, and that's the Oval Office ... he can assure non-discrimination with a stroke of a pen .... snap of a finger, what have you .... and he's doing it.

Unfortunately, it's not that simple when it comes to the rest of the free world.

39. No health benefits?
I guess that would cost the government too much...

That's okay, just let us not pay taxes and we will get our own health benefits.

4. I don't think they would do it ONLY for Federal Employees
Edited on Tue Jun-16-09 07:35 PM by Thrill
Would they? I don't think they would have to do it for that. Considering the State Department is allowing it without an executive order

it will be modeled on similar directives already in effect in many states and many multinational corporations.

18. KO just announced it as a blurb in the Associated Press. Now I have a question...
Do you guys think there must be a reason O hasn't been using that "stop loss thing" that executive order where he can stop the firing of gay military officials? I'm just wondering after this move.

20. because he doesn't want to alienate the military brass or do something deemed "controversial"
federal partner benefits are a good thing, widely popular, almost completely non-controversial (except to the far right) and a way for him to unilaterally do something in the hopes of taking down the political heat a notch or two.

21. Because its only a temporary solution. If he does that
You can bet your ass Congress will continue to push off repealing DADT. It gives Congress an out. And its something the next President can simply overturn. To actually get it repealed it needs to be done in Congress and signed by Obama

if the next President is an asshole, he/she could take away partner benefits for Federal employees with the stroke of a pen.

25. A Presidential Memorandum is not an Executive Order. Meaning this will only apply for Obama's term.
Whereas an Executive Order becomes the land of the law until overturned.

36. Well, you are missing the point
The *entire* brief was deeply offensive because it went way beyond the points the state needed to argue in order to just "show up."

Our rights would cost the government money? We are taxpayers who give more than our fair share and get considerably less than our fair share back from the government.

It looks like Obama isn't doing this on principle. He realizes how much we have personally given to Democratic politicians and how quickly that money could dissipate. Then there's the idiocy of this insulting brief coming out during gay pride month and Stonewall 40 to boot!

Every pride parade will, and ought to, turn into a protest.

Every wallet should be locked until the Obama administration starts taking a lead on human rights.
