Mousavi calls for truth commission
June 17, 2009

Mir-Hossein Mousavi, the leading reformist opposition presidential candidate, who was declared one of the losers by the Interior Ministry, has called for a “truth-finding commission,” to investigate allegations of ballot rigging.

The head of his Committee for the Safeguarding of Votes, Ali Akbar Mohtashamipour, announced the proposal at a press conference on Tuesday, ILNA reported.

Mohtashamipour - along with the representatives of the other two opposition candidates - had earlier had a long meeting with the election supervisory body, the Guardian Council, where they had explained their criticism of the conduct of the election process.

He said that he had told the council, “Because of the acts that have taken place, the people do not trust the Guardian Council and therefore you cannot supervise (dealing with our complaints). For this reason, we have called for the establishment of a 'truth-finding commission' made up of those who are trusted by the public, and enumerated 15 issues which this commission must investigate.”

He said the representatives of the other two opposition candidates had agreed with this idea and said that the council was going to consider this proposal on Wednesday.

Mohtashamipour, who is a member of the reformist-minded Association of Combatant Clerics, and has been an aide to Mousavi during his campaign, criticized the Guardian Council for “lack of impartiality” because of the presence of individuals backing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in particular, Gholam Hossein Elham, who is his Minister of Justice and government spokesman, as well as a member of the council.
