New WSJ/NBC Poll: Public Opposition to Obama on Gitmo, GM Decisions
A majority of Americans are in opposition to two of President Barack Obama’s major recent decisions. Just over half, 52%, said they oppose the president’s ordered closure of the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Nearly four in ten, 39%, support it.

Even more respondents, 56%, said they oppose the federal government’s financial intervention at General Motors while 35% support it.

There is also notable opposition, 41%, to Obama’s ban on enhanced interrogation tactics, including waterboarding, to question alleged terrorists. However, more respondents, 48%, favor the ban.

1. Many Americans are fascists
They didn't finally turn on Bush until they personally began to suffer from his policies. So sad. The America I loved as a child is long gone. Or maybe it was never really there to begin with.

4. I agree 100%
We have the bully pulpit, but maybe we dont know how to use it.
i blame our spokespeople for not educating the public.
They are a bunch of limpnoodles when it comes to explaining our point of view.
In fact it is disapointing and pisses me off to the point that i have to step back from the tv and just not watch news because im so pissed off at our sides wimpy-ness in explaining whats happening and why.

6. People have wrong idea about who are in Gitmo, how they got there, legal quandry.
Can't we compare GM going bust, unemployment and ripple effect vs saving GM, and maybe going bust later, slower, softer landing, or maybe surviving.

3. well ya the repubs were on TV talking about torture and gitmo for weeks

While the Dems were nowhere to be found.

If you look at the polls taken early in the year closing Gitmo and ending torture had quite a lot of support this is what happens when you let your opposition control the debate.

5. I wouldn't worry too much about Guantanamo
Once it's actually closed, people will forget about it. That's why it's necessary (politically) to get it done as soon as possible while still maintaining our security. After it fades from the headlines, people will see that the closure is not going to be the end of the world, and nobody (except the Gaffney/Perle crew) will be saying "gee, I wish we still had Gitmo".

7. hate radio and Fox "News" still run the country
nothing of substance will change until we destroy those two entities.

Also, this is a wsj poll so it was conducted, collated, and published by right-wing hacks who want to destroy the republic.

8. Overall approval at 56%
Down from 61% in the April 23/26 poll.

Still pretty good numbers.

13. True. His approval only decreased by 3% on that one
As compared to the next most recent CBS poll.
Not bad at all.

14. To be fair, there really was no dent in Obama's NBC numbers, either.
It's just the issue numbers where he's not doing as well.

15. People are already getting moved out of Gitmo and one detainee was sent to NY for trial
Edited on Wed Jun-17-09 08:43 PM by Proud Liberal Dem
Amazingly, the world hasn't ended yet. Heck, people were even getting released from Gitmo towards the end of Bush's (P)residency. How many detainees are even left now?

In regards to the auto industry, why exactly are people upset about his handling of the auto industry? Or about the deficit (but not the economy)?
