Edited on Wed Jun-17-09 08:34 PM by Flabbergasted
over the next ten years.

I've been listening to AA. During their news segments they have been discussing the health care overhaul. They have brought up the figure for the cost the last two days. 1 TRILLION DOLLARS OVER THE NEXT TEN YEARS.....

Hold on....Lets break that down....

100 billion a year....

That's less than 20% of what we pay for Defense. So if we pull out of Iraq we can pay for this health-care bill (or along those lines). I'll take it.

1. How much did Bush's tax cuts cost?
I know that it was more than a trillion dollars.

2. Dems have the crappiest messaging I swear.
I just shake my head half the time with these guys. Well, I think I know what's going on. They DON'T want to put it that simply.

4. The messaging is working just fine
If your goal is to avoid any possibility of public health insurance.

13. I fault the MSM
Republicans still outnumber Dems on cable news and the Sunday shows. They are letting the GOP frame the debate.

3. But junior said we're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight 'em over
here and it seems the work over there might never be done, so don't hold your breath in anticipation of any significant health-care reform. :P

5. And they're not mentioning how much the current system would cost over the next 10 years
and I'd bet it would be more than 1 trillion (with a good percentage going into the pockets of the insurance company executives and campaign "donations".)

"One trillion dollars!"

6. A trillion dollars minus what is already being paid for such things as
Medicare, Medicaid, Veteran's Hospitals, etc., Indian Health, CHIPS, government workers insurance programs, the military health system, personal insurance plans and employer paid insurance plans. That money is already there.

11. Yes. I think he would go a long ways in showing that a public option
or single payer plan would work simply by consolidating administrations of all health care programs already under government rule and even eliminate the three tier county/state/fed mess we now have which would save states and counties a great deal of money. I assume that he would need congress for some of this though.

10. We currently pay TWO .4 TRILLION, one trillion means SAVINGS!
We currently pay 2.4T$ per year for health care. Paying one trillion would mean a savings of about one-and-a-half trillion. SAVINGS. Paying less!

DUH!

21. No, this is $1 trillion of our tax dollars on top of everything else
It's going to cost at least $1 trillion of our tax dollars over the next 10 years to "overhaul" the system, as the Obama administration is calling it (and it's not even clear what this "overhaul" is supposed to look like). The nation, as a whole, individuals, employers, etc., is currently spending about $2.4 trillion/year on health care. The $1 trillion over ten years of tax dollars Obama wants to spend is entirely separate from that $2.4 trillion year spent by private citizens.

22. So, we'll take 2.4 to 2.5 for ten years where 1.0 would suffice.
Schmart.

On the nearly good side we'll save all those unnecessarily complicated jobs that are not needed and are in fact a useless waste of our money at the expense of our health. All so a few sell-out Dems can keep their campaign donations.

15. I wonder how many trillions might be collected in private
health insurance premiums over that same period of time if nothing is done. I suspect it would make a trillion look like chump change.

17. Had we kept the Clinton Era tax laws intact...
We would've had over $7 trillion of budget surpluses. That means we would have been able to throw money carelessly at the economic crisis, fully funded the wars in the Middle East, and still have money to provide health care and alternative energy initiatives. Thanks, George Bush!
