PETA wishes Obama hadn't swatted that fly
PETA wishes Obama hadn't swatted that fly

WASHINGTON (AP) — The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House.

PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.

"We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals."

5. No...it's not.
Sometimes PETA says noble things for noble causes...

Most of the time it's faceplant worthy.

2. There are times...
...and this is one of them.

Is PETA their own worst enemy? Their leadership needs to learn when and where to apply force.

14. +1.
They sound like a joke here. I originally thought this was from The Onion, too.

There are people who automatically tune them out because of shit like this.

6. Usually I can see PETA's point, but not this time
A fly is a pest and carries disease.

15. They probably provide these fine "animals" with a safe, nourishing environment.
After all, body lice and crabs have rights.

9. I thought he made a mistake and I wonder why there wasn't someone like
his body man taking care of it off camera. Spraying Windex takes care of flying pests really easily until you can remove them out of camera range.

Obama should have had the Secret Service wrestle that fly to the ground.

But that's it.

17. I doubt any in PETA really cares...
I always figured most of the ridiculous stuff they say is just to get attention to their cause...

...maybe I'm wrong though.

18. Bah! PETA Should Have Sent Chopsticks - Karate Kid Action!
Unlike the humane bug catcher, Obama might have actually been tempted to use them for pest control, which would have increased the bug's odds.

Hey, if the little bastards wanted to live, they would have stayed outside.

24. ...and PETA wonders why they're being laughed *at* into irrelevance.
Up next: Humane methods for eyelash mites, and how to avoid inconviencing amoeba in a puddle!

People who fail basic biology have shaky ground to tread on when trying to set science policy.

26. Lol they can't be serious.....
I didn't know they defended insects as well, I killed a few moths and a spider in the last few days around here I wonder how they would feel about that. PETA fights for some pretty noble causes but stuff like this just turns people away.

28. Dont worry PETA, it had 6-million offspring that day alone.
Give me a break....insects are too plentiful....granted i'd prefer to catch and put them outside too i honestly dont get very grumpy when i particuarly see a fly swatted.

29. If a housefly manages to land on the screen,
I will do the "close the glass door and slide open the screen door" maneuver for them.

I'm not so magnanimous when it comes to other critters though

It feels like my apartment is a war zone when it comes to bugs in the apartment. It's an old property, so ants come in regularly. And evidence of clothing moths freak me out. I hate that they go where I haven't cleaned for a while, like under beds and in storage closets. And finding that they've been around doesn't exactly make me feel like going near these areas either.

Almost phobic about ticks when I'm camping as well, come to think of it.

As for mice, they get the cheese wedge of death if they dare show their fuzzy faces where I can see them.

Just stay outta my abode and I'm cool. And that includes taking up residence on my person (damn ticks)

I'm just not very compassionate when it comes to the wee critters.
