Nate Silver: Obama has been too cautious on health care
Nate thinks the Obama team has been too cautious thus far on health care, not doing enough salesmanship and or twisting arms. Maybe President Obama could learn a thing or two from LBJ?

This has been an extremely cautious White House to date; they have scrupulously avoided doing anything that might ruffle Congressional or public feathers and they are probably afraid of gambling on a specific plan and losing. But as Neville Chamberlain learned long ago, and Spock learned in the latest version of Star Trek, caution does not always equate with safety. It is time for the White House to take hold of this debate and not let go.

At some point, President Obama has to take the fight to the entrenched interests.

Where IS it?

If he's just going to sign any legalized rape bill that comes out of the Congress then I wish he'd drop the whole thing turn to something else, and leave it for SOMEBODY WHO CARES.

11. Maher said more...like calling Obama a celebrity who hadn't done shit.
So, not quite what Maher basically said, IMO.

5. Obama is doing a fine job.
If the Democrats fail to get a public option passed then I will criticize all of them; including Obama. But, Obama has been fighting for a public option since the beginning - nothing has changed. We have no idea how he's fighting for votes, or what they will do if they don't get 60.

I think it's too early to criticize Obama, when it doesn't appear that he's comprised on anything.

7. I'm with Obama on this.
Congress is no joke and majority dislike Obama a great deal. Dems included.

12. The best time to take on the entrenched interest is in the final inning

First you want to reduce the number and power of those interests. You want to create division between them.

This is why the President is going 'slow' on health care (although by all congressional standards he is going at light speed and the Republicans are completely frustrated by the speed of the debate).

That is why he went to the AMA to try and woo them and seperate them from the Insurance Industry. It will be interesting to see if he chooses to leave the Insurance Industry isolated and the only clear target of the legislation or if he decides to go after both insurance and pharma. While I strongly prefer going after both I realize that going after both reduces the chance of final passage.

13. I agree. With the power and Congress he has, he can afford to be bold
Why he isn't, I have no idea.

14. What on earth is Nate talking about? What does he think the first town hall was
about or the fact that Obama has been publically urging Congress to get Healthcare reform passed this year. His visit to the AMA, or what about the television interviews he has next week on ABC? I don't see the President missing from the debate. The only thing I am worried about is the end result and whether it will actually give Americans affordable healthcare. The devil is in the details.
