Obama's Hawaiian birthright: Poi

Tiki torches line the South Lawn, and plates of poi will be served.

See?!! It's real!

Barack Obama's birth certificate. Stop the presses: He's an American. (So is John McCain, born in the Panama Canal Zone of American parents.)

by Mark Silva

Barack Obama was born in Hawaii.

So the president is bringing some island flavor to the White House.

The White House's annual picnic for members of Congress and their families -- which has featured red-and-white checked tablecloths, barbecue and country music in the past regime -- will take on theme of a Hawaiian luau this evening.

Tiki torches line the perimeter of the South Lawn, and potted palms have been imported for the day.

"It's almost like the 'Aloha' spirit lives at the White House," Alan Wong, a famed Hawaiian chef preparing tonight's meal, tells the AP.

Wong, who has been planning the menu with the White House for over a month, would not divulge the exact menu, but said that guests should expect traditional luau dishes such as roast pork and poi.

Traditional picnic fare will have a twist: wasabi potato salad.

Wong met Obama several years ago, when Obama ate at one of his Hawaiin restaurants. And this is a special meal that the president is planning.

"To do a luau in Hawaii is a special occasion," Wong said. "You throw a luau for your child's first birthday, or you throw a luau for a wedding."

Tihati, a performance group featuring members from each of the Hawaiian islands, will entertain tonight. Darlene Morikawa, of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, calls the performance a blend of Polynesian and traditional hula dancing.

The first lady offered a hint of the hula today.

1. How do you serve a plate of poi?
Poi isn't food....

That's cool he's bringing his culture to the White House. Oh, did any other president ever do something like this?! Did Bush ever have a BBQ at the White House?!

4. I have no idea-like sweet taters? I've heard it's nasty; maybe
you have to grow up with it, kind of like oysters. :scared:

5. I had poi at a luau in Hawaii
It's the consistency of glue, light purple, and tastes awful. :D

7. I'd say sour rather than nasty
There are a lot worse foods IMHO - natto, for one.

9. Oh come on- it's nowhere near as nasty as natto (or any number of other "delicacies")

14. It's a side dish..a condiment that
I can't wait to get back to Kaua'i to start eating again.

Made from the taro root on Hawai'i, anyway.

2. That certificate has been online for many months.
Read the foot note. It serves as "proof of birth in any court proceeding". Yet the wing nuts are still wanting a court proceeding.

seem to find it.
