Edited on Sat Jun-27-09 06:15 PM by Beacool
Yep, it's all the BeeGees, Donna Summer, The Jacksons and Gloria Gaynor's fault.

Quoting Gloria, Disco responds: "I will Survive".

21. That was a heavy rotation song in the 70s
The singer is Rick Dee's who is now a famous radio DJ. I think the song actually spawned a cartoon show.

I just wish the music industry hadn't decided "disco good-soul bad" at that point.

One big difference was that soul was political and spoke in the voice for the poor. Disco was almost always apolitical and escapist. It was for dancing while forgetting about reality.

Then again, I was just a kid when disco was big and wasn't think about the political impact of music.

5. Well let's see...
If he's 55, he was born in 1954.

You generally consider your childhood as your first ten years, right? I mean, maybe your preteens could be coupled with that, however, we'll just go up until the age ten as a childhood.

That takes us to 1964.

What was at its height in 1964?

Hm...

I guess one big change is that the former Democrats now call themselves Republicans. Before they called themselves Democrats they called themselves Republicans so in reality nothing has changed.

12. I interpret it to be a wail from an ignorant Southern redneck. And, having been born
Edited on Sat Jun-27-09 04:35 PM by bertman
and raised in the South, and being older than the wailing redneck, I am absolutely thrilled that the America I knew as a boy is having some of its worst elements destroyed. Jim Crow, the Southern Strategy, the Religious Right Whackjobs, all needed to go.

They have been mostly defanged, but we still have a list of others that need to be destroyed: gay bashing, militarism, anti-immigrant hatred, union busting, the white power structure to name a few.

Edited on Sat Jun-27-09 06:39 PM by lunatica
The blacks destroyed it by getting the right to eat at the local drugstore counter and entering through the front door.

Then he complained his childhood life was ruined by them uppity women who burned their bras and took his job and education.

Then he complained of those damn illegals taking jobs he didn't want or ever had.

So natch, now it's all Obama who's changed everything he holds so dear from his childhood, like when it was 'popular' to be the big bad ass boss white man.

Poor Asshole. Go ahead and feel sorry for yourself, since it the only sincere thing about you.

I would like to know where the quote came from, But I get a feeling that I appreciate the sentiment.

That America -- the one this 55 yr old southerner knew, has been gone a long time -- Maybe the person is just catching up...

Obama is putting one of the last nails in that coffin...

Mind you -- there are a lot of nails and this is all relative... The America he knew has been dying a slow death. Obama is not the last person to nail that coffin.

30. The United States is much different
than it was when that 'white southerner' was a boy. If he were paying attention, he would have noticed that the change was happening many years before Barack Obama was even a politician. Obama has become a handy excuse (scapegoat) for many that are afraid of, adverse to and/or intimidated by change.

There are many reasons for the change: population growth, deregulation of industry/corporations, change in education and expectations, technology, etc..., none having to do with Barack Obama, just a handy excuse for a seemingly ignorant, bigoted, racist citizen.

43. I find that interesting because generally,
... what we "know" as children, or "remember" from our childhoods turns out to be not-so-realistic, ie - my older brothers and sisters see "Happy Days" & say 'just like when I was a kid', and I view "The Brady Bunch" as my childhood -- but neither are based in reality ... more like rosy-colored mythology.

So, dude is reminiscing and mourning an "America" that may not really have ever existed, except for in his boyish ideals.
