60 Minutes: Brain Scanning -- Republicans can kiss their ass good bye
They did a segment showing how they can tell what a person is thinking. And I believe that they stated non invasive procedures would be ready in about 5 years.

1. Do you think any Republicans will be dumb enough
To stick their heads in that thing?

I mean, I know they're dumb!

8. Can I get this technology implanted, so that I can see it through my eyes?
Edited on Sun Jun-28-09 07:07 PM by namecallerholic
Isn't that the next step?

Or at least make me some James Bond glasses or shades that shows it.

9. Beats me.
What it looks like is that its using magnetic resonance imaging, which means those glasses would need a pretty big battery. I guess the brain emits some eletric signals on its own, http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2008/02/emotiv_epoc_neuroheadset_mindcontrolled_video_games.html though, so who knows! You may have your james bond glasses. :)

10. I'm all agog with this new technology. Pretty soon, I think they will be able
to tell if someone is lying and it will be accurate enough to be admitted into court. I pray it happens soon.

13. Whatcha wanna bet
that it gets use to nab pencil thieves and pot smokers at work loooong before it goes anywhere near a court room?

I have a problem with this, mainly because I feel certain that much like pretty much everything else it will be used against the peons and never come near the wealthy and powerful. I'm not sure about it in court, but definitely outside of a courtroom, I feel this is a dangerous thing. Though after actually seeing the clip of they are doing, I am less concerned, because this is a long way from useful. There is a vast difference between a computer answering an a/b question, with only 2 or 10 possibilities, and "reading minds"

and stories I had read on MRI and mind reading. But as to the rich getting away with stuff...they get away with stuff because of better lawyers. A lie detector test that was admisable in court and really worked would stop the injustice. Plus innocent people would not be put in jail.

12. I'm a saleswoman, I do that all day long......
.... and I can do it from 10 feet away. Been doing it for years.

And unlike that machine, I can make you give me some money. :)

14. As someone who knows people in the brain scanning field...
this is hype. Brain scans may sometimes be able to detect people's intended movements before they make them - but so can the average observer, with only the hi-tech piece of apparatus known as an eye.

It will be a long time, if ever, before brain scans can tell you anything about what someone is thinking that you wouldn't have known already. They can tell you things about what parts of the brain you use to do different forms of thinking, and of course help to diagnose structural problems like strokes and tumours - but no one can hope to become 'psychic' through technology, or need fear that Big Brother with a brain scanner will read your mind any more accurately than Big Brother without a brain scanner.

But I liked your subject line! For most Republicans and other right-wingers, a brain scan could probably be easily combined with a colonoscopy!
