Gay Lt. Col to be in uniform at WH ceremony today

A reader writes in ahead of today's White House event commemorating Stonewall:

One of latest DADT discharges, Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach, will be attending the reception today at 3:30 at WH. President and Mrs. Obama scheduled to attend. Victor will be in uniform (with his eight medals, one for heroism). He's been in 18 yrs, about to lose retirement and career under "don't ask, don't tell." Wonder what President would say re DADT if they meet this afternoon. Surely Obama would meet the (likely) only uniform person in the room.

Obamas hosting 300 for party
By MIKE ALLEN

At 4:25 p.m., the president and the first lady will host a reception in the East Room for LGBT Pride Month.

About 300 guests are expected for the celebration of LGBT heritage and pride, the first pride event of the Obama administration. Families, couples, volunteers, activists, advocates, leaders and grassroots members of the community were invited, as well as students from gay organizations and PFLAG families.

1. Good.. glad they are hosting.. and expect movement on DADT
to come from the generals in the next little bit. The President will escort the generals to the microphone with his hand on their backs.. they will make a statement that it is time for all to serve with dignity... The President will step up to the microphone and tell congress it is time to overturn DADT. Then even the right can sign on the overturn, and finally get a united front from everyone on this.

Its time...long past I know.. but the time is now

The Power of Obama's Touch

By XANA O'NEILL

Updated 5:44 PM EDT, Thu, Jan 29, 2009

Obama is a hands-on kind of president -- literally.

A hallmark of the new commander-in-chief's expression of disapproval is what has become known as the Obama Touch -- the pat on the shoulder, the shoulder grab or the tap on the back that all are nonverbal cues that signal displeasure and disapproval, reported Politico.

Obama stuck his fingers in Vice President Joe Biden's back after the veep joked about Chief Justice John Roberts flubbing the oath of office last week to show his disapproval.

" was castigating him. There's no other way to put it," former FBI special agent Joe Navarro, a specialist in nonverbal communication told Politico. "Biden got it immediately. It looked like a little, subtle touch, but you could immediately see that Vice President Biden was contrite after that."

When the commander-in-chief became irked at a Politico reporter's question during a visit to the White House press room last week he started patting the journo on the shoulder, the site reported.

A second reporter who was given the hand-on-shoulder treatment from Obama during his campaign said he could tell the then-senator was annoyed but the gesture felt "confidential."

The touch "seemed to have a twofold purpose -- to express his annoyance and also to convince you that you were wrong," the writer told Politico.

Obama trotted out the touch again to defuse a potential ugly situation when an aggressive fan seeking a photo rushed up to him during a June campaign stop in Philadelphia. Obama stopped and touched the fan's arm then explained to him he couldn't take a photo.

"That was a way of placating, making him feel that 'I'm here, I'm listening to you,'" behavioral analyst and body language expert Maxine Lucille Fiel told Politico.

Try this with a friend some time..... stand face to face as if you were talking to them ... put your hand on their shoulder (or have them do it to you.) It's brilliance! It says "I like you enough to touch you, but have no doubt, *I* am in control of this situation...."

He does it all the time...

(and note, the placement of his hand, shoulder vs. bicep, is a direct indicator of his confidence level ... the more in control of the situation he feels, the higher the hand, note the Joes vs. McCain, Chavez and Hillary.)

(this one is especially hot!)

4. We'll see...
It would be the right thing to do. But that's no guarantee, as past behavior illustrates

5. Unfortunately, he was not allowed to wear his uniform....
.... said on Rachel tonight that his chain of command informed him this morning they considered it a political event and they considered it "inappropriate" for him to be in uniform.

See what the President is dealing with? The man was attending THE WHITE HOUSE ..... the PEOPLE'S HOUSE ... and his CO's treated it like a campaign rally?!!!!

And yet we expect the President to just whip out a pen and make everything alright?

Either way, everyone should check out his segment on Rachel when it's repeated later tonight or on the web .... he said that while he felt personally aggravated because the time frame sounded like it would not happen soon enough to help his case, he was generally pleased with what the President had to say and that he intended to keep his promise.

13. Here's the video of Fehrenbach on MSNBC tonight. Losing job and pension.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x330931

I felt very sad when I watched this tonight. I posted about it, but I deleted the post because praise for Obama on this issue seems to be the way things go here.

Fehrenbach has about 5 months, and he said change would not come fast enough for him.

Lt. Dan Choi gets his trial tomorrow.

I did not see this video as a positive, it did not give me warm feelings. I am not gay, but I can not imagine losing my pension if I were in that position.

Obama told him it was a "generational issue." Actually it is a religious right issue, and our party is scared to death of them. I am pretty old, and I disagree about the generational thing. The religious right succeeded in using this group as scapegoats, and there is no one in the administration speaking out strongly.

BTW Fehrenbach is gracious, he says he understands. But he is still losing his job and Choi still goes on trial tomorrow.
