I am happy he reaffirmed his promises to further civil rights in the U.S.

eta the word "am".

1. I'm sure the Freepers are freaked out right now. They didn't see any
leather chaps, whips, or S&M stuff in that room. They can't believe that GLBT people are as normal as apple pie.

I'll believe in progress when I see it being made. Pretty words and flowery speeches we've gotten so many times in the past, from men other than Mr. Obama, that I find it very difficult to believe any politician. I truly hope that Mr. Obama will be different, but once bitten and all that.

It seems to me that the speech is not just flowery words but an actual agenda and plan of action.

If you believed it was an agenda and plan, would that make you more confident?

Obama not only agrees with you; he said it in his speech. And, he's the only one that has ever promised to accomplish these types of goals for the GLBT community. That's pretty important, considering he's the POTUS.

It doesn't matter whether I "believe" his words or not.

What matters is what he does. If he repeals dadt, then his words mean something. If not, then they don't.

52. Perhaps DU has not changed, and perhaps I am being overly optimistic,
but I am hoping the leadership Obama demonstrated on this issue will bring the desired change within the time line he gave himself. Congress is already working on repealing DADT according to my TV.

I know Obama is against gay marriage, and I still hold that against him, but I have to admit that he is finally moving on the other civil rights issues he promised. I was starting to believe he lied about his true civil rights position.
