Any door-to-door advice?
I'm preparing to go door-to-door in my apartment community (about 75 units) and a public housing project down the road. I'd appreciate any advice people who have done this can give me on the most effective approach for the ultimate goal: getting votes for Kerry. Here's my plan for now, but please offer suggestions if there are things to be done differently:

- I'll begin by saying that I'm a neighbor (I'll be recognized by most) registering voters.

- If they are unregistered, I'll ask them if we can complete the form I'll have on hand. Takes about five minutes. Then I'll talk to them a bit about Kerry and leave a Kerry flyer with them.

- If they are registered, I'll say, "May I ask if you've decided who to vote for?"

- If they say Kerry, or undecided, I'll leave some materials. I'll encourage them to think about Kerry if they are undecided and ask them to share the flyers I have with their friends if they are already for Kerry. I'll also ask if they need a ride to the polls on election day.

- If they are for Bush, my intention is simply to say, "Okay. Thanks for your time." I have a feeling that an attempt to debate may simply strengthen their resolve and that I'd do better not to fan their passions.

Anything else I can do or say to be effective?

1. If you are doing this on your own and can be blatantly partisan
I did campus "vote pledging" for VoteMob last night and came to realize that most Bush voters are woefully unenformed. Even the kids that looked progressively cool. They do not know Iraq is a debacle, they are not smart enough to relaize that war has made us less safe. They have no idea what Nobel prize winning economists are saying.

With VoteMob I could not use any of the flyers I created and boy did I need them.

7. I dropped Draft Alert at a tattoo parlor yesterday and you
should have seen their faces when they saw ages 18-34

I am also going to hit African American barbershops.

2. Check to see if your apartment complex has rules against solicitation
When I did a door-to-door survey for my state democratic party, we were not allowed to go into apartment complexes because they are private property. If some of your neighbors complain, your landlord could take actions against you, especially if your apartment complex has rules against solicitation.

4. I'll take the chance
There are no "no soliciting" signs posted and we get door-to-door solicitations all the time. By the time someone complains, if they do, I'll be done.

8. I love street canvassing because...
I know you are not in the shower or sleeping when I contact you and I can size you up visually to determine if you are a likely democratic voter.

6. IMPORTANT: for the unregistered - find one issue to make them register
draft, jobs, schools - try to customize it by their age, age of their kids.
make them understand it affects their lives directly - in as few words as possible.
