I really think this whole CBS memo thing will work in our favor
For the next six weeks the Republicans are going to go nuts over this. That is all they will want to talk about.

Meanwhile, Kerry is going to focus on the things that really matter; the utter failure of Bush's Iraq War, skyrocketing health insurance and Medicare premiums, Bush administration support of exporting US jobs.

The CBS "scandal" is red meat for the Republican base, but they are going to be the ones wasting time on it. Which is a net plus for us, IMO.

1. Yup, I think the Republicans are in meltdown...

And the more heat Kerry puts on them, the more stupid they react.

drip drip drip

Can't wait for F911 to be released.

3. It is crystal clear that it was a set-up.
But remember how quickly the Swift Boat lies feeding frenzy stopped once it ceased to be a crowd pleaser. The right wing machine starts this and stops it.

If the press starts focusing on issues and/or issues there will be a major terralert.

4. A dissenting voice
The real story was (or should have been) Bush's activities in the Guard.
The real story became dirty tricks docs faxed to CBS from Texas.
The real story with legs is now - who caused the dirty trick, from DNC to independent scammers. That is the public perception. That is the public debate. That is the shame.

The first "real" story is now buried forever and will never, ever be mentioned again. Not by anyone wishing to keep their fingertips unburned. That is the genius of this move. A true story, with false documents. you get the damaging story out, yet, it is ignored by all because of the false docs. This is no victory for us. This is a clear Rovian move which is exploding in our faces. Even though no DEM had anything to do with those false docs.

This is an embarrassment to us, a slick move by the GOP, and again, we look flat footed.

Yes, the Senator is finding his voice (at last). Yes, his message is better (finally). But no, there is no one in the campaign with the smarts and experience with slime needed to deal with stories like this. Unfortunately, this crowds out the Senator's message. Which is what was intended all along.

:(

5. And another dissenting voice.
I hope to read this again in six months.

And I hope to look back on a vicious, dirty, hard-fought but victorious campaign won by a man who has fought all of his life, a man who has had to fight all odds and a media bent on destroying his candidacy to reach the people, and who was successful. I hope in six months to hear the words "Kerry Administration" commonplace on the evening news. I will look back with satisfaction.

If that does not happen, then I will look back on this message as a distress call. We tried everything we knew to try and spoke to as many people as we could and shook as many hands and sent emails to news organizations and spoke to reporters and people on the street and people at rallies and pamphleted and had the better candidate and were better on all of the issues and faced an opponent who cannot speak in complete sentences and brought the nation to a billions dollar, bloody war obliterating any notion of foreign policy based on lies everyone knows about -- but somehow it wasn't enough.

And when that isn't enough, something, somehow has gone terribly wrong.

6. I agree with everything you say except it crowding out Kerry's message
I think Kerry's message will get out just fine. He is starting to go direct to the people (Letterman last night was just the first step). The debates will be the "Big Show".

We'll be alright.

10. I want to believe that you are correct.
I sure hope you are. I know, I know. We have 41 days, a virtual eternity in election campaigns. But I've got these nasty burrs up my ass and I just want the campaign to FULLY understand the Rovian creeps they face. Nothing is too nasty or dirty for them to pull. Nothing is beyond the imagination. There is nothing, absolutely nothing that they won't do to retain power.

Recognition (of the Roviam Machine) is one thing; having an experienced hand to deal with it, anticipate it and prevent the intended outcome - now, that is still not visible.

17. He was terrific on Letterman!
The top 10 tax cuts Bush wants to implement were great! He came across informed, articulate, but able to laugh & also poke a little fun at himself -- something I doubt the Dim son ever does. Bullies do not poke fun at themselves for fear it might be true.

My prediction: Kerry will win by a landslide.

12. We knew this was going to get ugly.
So now that the mud starts flying, we all give up?? We lose?? We look like fools?? Cripes, I expect this from the pink tutu chorus on Capitol Hill, but from DU??

Not me. This thing hasn't played out. And we'd better learn to ride this bull, and fast, because there's no way The Excuse pResident and the Party of Nixon are going to put it back in its pen.

23.

7. One thing I did notice last night on MSRNC...
Tweety was blathering as he always does and he mentioned how "bloggers" jumped on this almost immediatly after CBS aired the story. It mentioned these "right of center" blogs and showed the name of the site that first "broke" the story. Maybe the exposure of these RIGHT WING BLOGS will show ordinary folks what freaks they really are.

9. I agree. Rather and CBS are taking a hit, not Kerry.
I can't feel too much sympathy for Rather or CBS, considering how they've basically followed the Bush Media pack up until now.

11. Cool Heads People - This story will run it's course very soon!
The attention span of the media and the public are shorter than ever. Thing is, in the "new" media environment, the news cycle is speeded up much faster than it used to be. This one will run it's course very soon, and we'll be back to the issues (where the focus should be) ... unless new important information comes out of course.

13. Hey, I remember when Jerry had dark hair.
So, not all Heads have short memories.

But, it is not short attention spans, it is the competing interests that attract our attention.

So I pose a slightly different question: Who in the Senator's campaign understands this new news cycle - combined with the Rovian goon squad activities?

16. Rather fucked up the whole TANG issue...IMO
This was already a win...why did Rather even bother with this story? We won this one back in 2000 - the CW/impression was that something fishy happened at the end of Bush's TANG service.

Thanks to Dan Rather the new CW/impression is: Bush completed his TANG service "honorably" and that "Kerry tried to fake some memos..."

We know that's not the case...but that's how it will play out in barrooms and laundry mats around the nation...
