Haha -- Kerry says Chimp wanted debate "life lines"

Kerry: Bush Wanted Debate 'Life Lines'

NEW YORK - Why did it take so long for the Bush and Kerry campaigns to agree on a debate schedule? Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) had the answer for television's Regis Philbin, who has hosted the quiz show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?"

"The big hang-up was George Bush (news - web sites) wanted to get life lines, you know, so he could call somebody," the Democratic candidate for president quipped Tuesday while appearing on "Live With Regis and Kelly."

Sorry if you all already knew this -- I didn't see the show.

Hit the story with a "5," please!

(Or is this lowering *'s expectations?)

The public needs to get it through its collective fucking head that Bush is a supreme idiot.

3. Bush is a skilled and masterful debater, I hope Kerry can hold his own
Don't lower the expectations for Bush. Demand he meet a standard, raise the bar.

If Bush fumbles, mumbles, and dissembles during the debates - he isn't fit to be President.

5. He's Not Stupid, He's Incompetent And Ideological
It's not his failures of syntax that bother me, it's his failures of policy.

2. Kerry's tearing it up lately!
maybe he's trying to reach over the "mainstream news media"'s presentation of him as "stiff and senatorial" and show people who he really is.

4. Well, Originally, Bush Wanted 9/11 Commission Style Debates
With Cheney covering the microphone while he told Bush the answers.

6. Kerry is doing a fantastic job of making a joke out of Bush.
That's what he needs to do.

Bush is a fucking joke. He's an idiot. Push that meme!

10. Big mistake
This is not a funny election. The only people that will appreciate *the campaign* making a joke of Bush are already Kerry supporters. Let the comics handle that.

12. The repukes smirk and chuckle all the time
It does work, dopey Americans interpret it as confidence or something.

13. Sorry, but frontal assaults on Bush's intelligence are not going to work
they will only generate sympathy for the idiot. Don't let our inherent smugness cloud the truth about Bush being a liar.

15. I think you're mistaken
Good-natured jokes are endearing. As long as they aren't mean or ugly, it's okay.

It helps people see John as an approachable and real person.

18. Good natured joking and "making a joke out of Bush"
are two different things. I agree with you that *ribbing* is useful. Two big mistakes that we Democrats as a whole tend to make:
1) To think that we're smarter than everyone else
2) To have the gall to actually say it

The 2nd tends to prove that the 1st isn't true.

21. That's an excellent point.
There is a danger in going to far and comedy from candidates has to be used sparingly.

At this point, after a month of being attacked with the Swiftboat liars, I think it's a good strategy.

The beauty of this "lifeline" quip is that it isn't really Bush specific. It could be said of any floundering campaign.

11. When the pressure is turned up Kerry seems like one of those people....
...capable of responding with his very best efforts. Look back through his biography and you see it happening time after time.

The thing that I admire the most is that he makes it appear so effortless.

That wouldn't help the Shrub much. He'd burn through his 3 life lines in the first 5 minutes of the debate!
