Poll question: DU and Obama-skeptics/critics -- 6-month checkpoint
As we're approaching the halfway-mark of President Obama's first year in office, I was wondering how the DU community currently looks at progressives who have sounded notes of criticism and caution about the President.

If you're interested in seeing a large sample of answers, please kick with a reply (in addition to voting). Whether you think DU has too much criticism of Obama, too little, the wrong kind, or whatever, you might find the results interesting -- so please put in your two cents with a vote and a reply.

In your replies, please describe how Obama has performed relative to your own expectations, and how you currently feel about those who frequently criticize Obama from the left.

For those who criticized the critics:

Do you feel Obama critics owe you (and him) an apology? Do you feel you owe them an apology?

Ok, let me spell this out..... my comment was in reference to Obama's critics who are
trying to figure the President out, I hope this clears up any doubt.

22. Damn! I hate unnecessary obliqueness
I'm not slow. I just wanted you to say what you really mean, which you still haven't, BTW.

What is it that you think Obama critics should figure out about the President?

24. I'm not so sure what your motives are
Edited on Tue Jul-14-09 11:46 AM by Hutzpa
for doing this unscientific poll, but the more you write the more I see what
you're trying to achieve.

If you can't understand my simple statement instead of trying to find whats not
there then my only conclusion to that is..... YOU are the one being OBLIQUE, (to
use your word) whereas, you're trying to be cataclysmic with your approach in finding
out how people feel about the President, which is the reason why I responded the
way I did in the first place.

I was addressing the critics, without realizing you are one of them.

eg: your statement of the result that the poll is evenly split is skewered
in a way to make it seemed as if DU is divided when it comes to the Democratic
President, in other words, you are looking for divisions among DU and then
use that to perpetuate your position which is what your motives where in the
first place, case in point below.....

8. Interesting results (so far)
Looks, from this unscientific sample, like DU is evenly split between those who are fully satisfied with Obama and those who are largely dissatisfied with him.

It will be interesting to see how this changes over time.

Thanks to all who have voted!

11. "DU is evenly split between...fully satisfied with Obama and...largely dissatisfied with him. "
Obama has proven his critics wrong (30 votes, 40%) Vote
Obama has mostly done a better job than his critics predicted (5 votes, 7%) Vote
Split decision: about half the criticisms proved false, about half proved true (5 votes, 7%) Vote
Too early to say (8 votes, 11%)

Obama's critics were mostly correct (26 votes, 35%) Vote
Obama's critics have been proven correct (1 votes, 1%) Vote

Yeah, 65% to 36% is an even split. Even moving the "split decision" voters (which in no way implies "largely dissatisfied") to the bottom group, it doesn't result in an even split, that is unless 58% to 43% is considered even these days.

"Evenly split" = spin

15. I just crunched the same numbers...
What I find interesting, it that DU (a democratic activist site) is mirroring the general public in approval/disapproval numbers? Something is rotten in Denmark on that one.

23. At the time I posted that comment
There were two more "critics-mostly-correct" votes than "critics-proven-wrong" votes, with those two choices being vastly more popular than any of the others. Looks bifurcated to me. YMMV.

10. Not terribly pleased so far..
Would not let me vote because I'm new to the forums. Not happy with single payer being "off the table" and seems to me the stimulus is more about tax $s to banks and corps. A lot is going to hinge on how health care reform pans out and the EFCA. If he lets efca go belly up, I think I'll go back to the greens.

20. Uggh, shaping up to be another dichotomous split
What is with this place - "it's not black!" another pipes in "it must be white then."

any president in my lifetime, except maybe Truman.
Except Obama has done it in 6 months.

25. second answer
He's not perfect; I'd like to see more motion on DADT, more starch on the public option for health care, and a LOT more done on prosecutions of the Bush/Cheney cabal, but so far, so good. B+ in my book.
