"We're going to go bankrupt as a nation," Biden said
Audio here

"And folks look, AARP knows and the people working here today know, the president knows, and I know, that the status quo is simply not acceptable," Biden said at the event on Thursday in Alexandria, Va. "It's totally unacceptable. And it's completely unsustainable. Even if we wanted to keep it the way we have it. It can't do it financially."

"We're going to go bankrupt as a nation," Biden said.

"Well, people when I say that look at me and say, What are you talking about? You're telling me we have to go spend money to keep from going bankrupt?'" Biden said. "The answer is yes, I'm telling you."

1. isn't the point that if we don't have reform, we'll go bankrupt?
I don't get what the big deal is.

we have a few lines spoken mid-speech. It'd be nice to know what he said after that, since context is always a good thing.

Edited on Thu Jul-16-09 06:01 PM by Cali_Democrat
Biden simply stated the obvious.....if we continue down the same path without reform, we will go bankrupt as a nation. Do you disagree with that notion?

Then you post a picture of Biden with a puppy. Are you disturbed that he's holding a puppy? Does it piss you off? Or do you always post pictures of Biden holding a puppy?

you are not much better than the greedy old pigs on the other side of the aisle....all talk, but no action to help the people.hypocrit

8. The OP has been visiting the Drudge Report.
This whole bankrupt thing sounded like a reich wing meme to me. A few minutes ago I decided to visit Drudge's website. Well whatya know....Drudge has a huge picture of Joe Biden up top with these same quotes and a link to CNS News.

CNS news is a reich wing news website that always smears Dems. The audio file in this post is the same one linked by CNS news. :eyes:

It seems to me the OP is trying to spread reich wing memes right here on DU. How can this be allowed to happen here?

15. Credit Card Republicanism Broke the Bank

During Jimmy Carter’s last year in office the National Debt was $9.8 billion dollars. One primary reason I voted for Reagan in 1980 is he said he was going to do something about the National Debt. True to his word he and George H.W. Bush did, they tripled it. They ran up more debt in 12 years than the nation had incurred in over 200 years combined. Congress actually appropriated (spent) less money than Reagan budgeted. Had it not been for the restraint of the Democrats in control of Congress, Reagan’s fiscal stain on America would have been even worse. http://zfacts.com/p/57.html

Clinton left a white stain on a blue dress, the last three Republican presidents have left a sea of red ink on our national ledger.

GWB outdid both his father and Rapmaster Ronnie, -combined-. George W. Bush is the greatest deficit spender in all of recorded human history.

Credit Card Republicanism is slowly strangling our economy. Using the cash method of accounting, as our government does, our debt is over $9.3 trillion dollars. Using the accrual method of accounting, which all business’ use, our national debt and obligations are in excess of $59 trillion dollars, or about $375,000.00 per working American. You and I will not live long enough to pay that off. We are handing this debt to our children. Shame on us.

All but about 22% of that crippling debt has been incurred by the fiscal policy of the last three Republican presidents. America can not afford another Republican in the White House, at least not another Republican that embraces the fiscal irresponsibility of Reagan/Bush/Bush.

A strong economy is fundamental to a strong military, thus one must conclude, given the sixty year record of the Republican Party delivering economic fubar, failure and “F” up, that they hate our troops.

And Joe is a bit too blunt for some.

He was trying to say that we need to spend money to fix healthcare and other things that in the long run will cost us more. Like you said, that is what we on DU all keep saying.

21. Maybe because it's not the whole story? You think?
Cut and copy the first paragraph of the CSN "transcript" which you posted, "And folks look, AARP knows and the people working here today know, the president knows, and I know, that the status quo is simply not acceptable," Biden said at the event on Thursday in Alexandria, Va. "It's totally unacceptable. And it's completely unsustainable. Even if we wanted to keep it the way we have it. It can't do it financially" and paste it into Google.

Here's some of the results:

Is it just a coincidence that the only sites carrying this "story" are ALL Reich-wing websites from Free Republic to Storm Front? The answer is a big fat NO!

You see, what you and all these Reich-wing websites have done is taken three paragraphs, OUT OF CONTEXT, in order to SPIN the words of the Vice-President. They ignore EVERYTHING else he said and concentrate on only three paragraphs. That way, they can spin and distort Biden's words. This is nothing new. This is an old and tired practice of the Reich. And you are either too dumb to realize it and have fallen for it or are purposely helping them spread misinformation. Which is it?

Edited on Thu Jul-16-09 11:18 PM by Cali_Democrat
It's clear from your OP that you disagreed with what Biden was saying. You even decided to venture over to the Drudge Report and post audio that was linked by wingnut CNS news.

Also, why post the picture of Biden with a puppy? It was simply your lame attempt to be snarky.

25. And you used the headline "We're going to go bankrupt as a nation" to get that message across?
And the three paragraphs you and the Reich-wing websites zeroed in on said absolutely nothing about "health reform."

Meanwhile, non-Reich-wing sources of information did the exact opposite of what you and your Reich-wing sources did. They told the whole story and didn't just take out of context three paragraphs from what Biden said and present those three paragraphs as the story!

For instance:

Health Care is Topic A at Biden Task Force Meeting in Virginia
By Yamiche Alcindor
Vice President Biden convened a meeting of the administration's Middle Class Task Force in Alexandria today to discuss how Obama's health care reform proposals will affect older Americans, taking questions for an hour before an audience of more than a hundred senior citizens.

26. "We're going to go bankrupt as a nation," is pretty effective imagery
The puppy pic seemed to be a hit here before, I'm not sure why you are attempting to denigrate Biden's words or his images. They are the truth, they are effective. Too many here are way too quick to jump on the messenger, even on stories that are the hard, honest truth.

Again, if you are bothered by, or embarrassed by the truth, I don't know how to help you.

27. I love that you're getting attacked for posting an audio clip of what the VP said... amazing.
Sure you have the puppy pic, but you're being attacked for finding this link/story (even if you went to drudge, big deal, it doesn't have slams against the VP, just his audio clip and text of what he said, and I've only been to drudge's site one time in my life - avoid the bastard getting a hit on his site! lol) and posting his actual comments...

sigh. I'm so tired of cheerleading of this Admin. without any amount of dissent over choices being allowed by some (they remind me of the B*sh backers ignoring him destroying our country and giving Obama a shitty mess to deal with to begin with!), and you don't even do that like I did in my OP about how likable the president is but how he's failed so far imho on many issues, you simply provided some words by the VP and are smeared!!! LOL gotta love it.

OH, and the VP is right, but he also was part of the problem in the Senate....
